Assistant Project Manager

As we grow, we’re looking for an Assistant Project Manager who’s not afraid to roll up their sleeves, wear multiple hats, and help shape the future of a builder that still believes in craftsmanship, communication, and community.

About the Company

Halsey Homes is a family‑run custom home builder committed to crafting beautiful, high‑quality homes throughout the Fredericksburg region and beyond. We specialize in custom builds, renovations, additions, and build‑on‑your‑land services – bringing vision and value together for every client. Our projects are deeply personal, and so is our approach.

About The Job

You’ll serve as the point person for residential construction projects from groundbreaking to completion. Working closely with our trades, suppliers, and clients, you’ll help us deliver projects on time, on budget, and up to our high standard of quality.

This is a hands‑on role perfect for someone with some residential construction management or trade‑based experience looking to take the next step in a fast‑moving, small team environment.

While this is primarily a project‑management role, we’re a small, tight‑knit team and expect all hands on deck when needed. That means you should be comfortable jumping in to assist with labor tasks, punch‑out work, or whatever it takes to help move a project forward. Whether it’s helping install trim or doing a quick jobsite cleanup, you’re the kind of person who doesn’t mind rolling up your sleeves.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily job site operations across multiple active custom builds or renovations
  • Coordinate and schedule subcontractors, trades, inspections, and material deliveries
  • Conduct site walks and quality control inspections
  • Maintain clear communication with homeowners throughout the build process
  • Collaborate with the office team to manage budgets, change orders, and Job Tread schedules
  • Ensure job site cleanliness, site safety, and code compliance
  • Identify and solve issues proactively to avoid delays or cost overruns
  • Document job progress via photos, notes, and updates in our systems
  • Work closely with the President to improve processes and build a reputation for excellence
  • Support jobsite tasks as needed, including punch‑out work, material handling, or light labor, especially to keep projects on schedule
Requirements
  • At least 3 years of hands‑on experience in residential construction – whether that’s with a builder, or in a trade. We value people who know how homes go together from the ground up
  • Strong working knowledge of construction methods, local codes, and materials
  • Excellent organizational, scheduling, and communication skills – you will be working directly with clients, trade partners, designers, and our internal staff
  • Comfortable using construction management software (we use Job Tread), and other various computer software systems
  • A proactive, solutions‑oriented mindset — you take ownership and follow through
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and collaborate with our small team
  • Punctual – able to effectively manage time to ensure deadlines are met and meeting schedules are followed
  • A positive attitude, attention to detail, and a genuine interest in building homes that last
  • Drivers license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to lift 80 lbs.
  • A willingness to travel around to various jobsites
Nice to Have
  • VA Class A or B contractor license (or interest in obtaining it)
  • Proficiency in Spanish
Benefits
  • Competitive Salary or hourly rate — based on experience
  • Paid time off for full‑time employees — vacation and sick leave, accrued over time
  • Flexible scheduling — we understand life happens and work together to accommodate
  • All tools and equipment provided — for use on the job
  • Opportunities for growth — learn the business hands‑on and advance as we grow
  • Collaborative, family‑like atmosphere — small team, direct communication, and shared pride in our work
  • Occasional team outings and gatherings — we enjoy celebrating milestones together

Halsey Homes complies with all Virginia labor laws, including worker’s compensation insurance and workplace safety standards.
