The Laborer II supports asphalt paving operations by performing skilled and semi-skilled tasks that contribute to the safe and efficient completion of road construction projects. This role requires prior paving or construction experience and the ability to operate small equipment including a broom tractor, shuttle buggy, skid steer, and similar machinery, while working effectively with minimal supervision.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with asphalt placement by raking, shoveling, and distributing material to achieve proper grade and smoothness.
  • Perform pavement removal and surface preparation using jackhammers, shovels, and other tools.
  • Operate small tools and light equipment such as blowers, tampers and saws.
  • Operate a broom tractor to maintain clean, debris-free surfaces before and during paving operations if designated.
  • Operate a shuttle buggy to maintain continuous asphalt flow and mix uniformity during paving operations if designated.
  • Operate a skid steer for material handling, site cleanup, grading, and other assigned tasks if designated.
  • Operate a sign truck to deploy, maintain, and retrieve traffic‑control signage for work zones if designated.
  • Perform daily designated equipment inspections and basic maintenance, including checking fluids, cleaning filters and reporting mechanical issues.
  • Support paver and roller operators by monitoring material flow, adjusting edges, and ensuring consistent mat quality.
  • Sets up, maintains, and removes traffic‑control devices and serves as a flagger to safely direct vehicles and construction traffic when needed.
  • Perform advanced jobsite preparation: clearing debris, sweeping, grading edges, and staging tools and materials.
  • Perform safety checks, use proper PPE, follow work‑zone procedures, keep safe distances, report hazards immediately, and maintain a clean, compliant, hazard‑free worksite.
  • Communicate effectively with crew members and follow directions with minimal supervision.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
  • 1–2 years of paving or construction experience required.
  • Ability to read, follow and interpret safety documents, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals, plans and grade.
  • Strong understanding of paving operations, jobsite safety requirements, effective traffic‑control practices and proper use of hand tools.
  • Reliable transportation.

  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and work as part of a team.
  • Must maintain constant situational awareness of moving vehicles, heavy machinery, and other hazards inherent to paving and construction operations.

  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and nights as required.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
Physical Demands

This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds; stand, walk, bend, kneel, and perform repetitive motions for extended periods; tolerate noise, vibration, heat, and outdoor conditions common to paving operations; demonstrate the manual dexterity needed to use hand tools and equipment; and maintain good eye‑hand coordination, physical fitness, multi‑limb coordination, static strength, and balance.

Work is performed outdoors on roadways, construction zones, and active traffic areas, often in hot, cold, or otherwise adverse weather. Employees are regularly exposed to hot asphalt, dust, fumes, loud noise, and vibration from tools and equipment.
