Job Description

Comprised of 31 schools and home to a diverse student population of over 24,000, Spotsylvania County Public Schools is one of the largest School Divisions in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

As a teacher, you develop and implement instructional programs that effectively provide the best possible education for each and every student. This role provides teaching services in self‑contained classrooms to students whose educational needs are not met by a general education environment.

Essential Job Functions
  • Provides specialized instruction and individualized educational planning for students whose needs cannot be met within the general classroom.
  • Develops, implements, and annually reviews Individualized Education Programs (IEP) according to federal, state, and local procedures; maintains records of performance and IEP implementation to evaluate progress, including report cards and IEP progress reports.
  • Assists in screening, evaluating, and recommending student placements for the division’s special education program.
  • Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team to provide appropriate educational programs for students with disabilities.
  • Holds periodic parent conferences and/or home visits.
  • Complies with all special education procedures from the division‑wide handbook and Virginia State Regulations Governing Students with Disabilities.
Education and Experience

Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Ability to obtain appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
  • Acceptable rating of prior teaching experience, as applicable.

Preferred

  • Currently possesses a Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License within a specific endorsement area(s).
  • Prior teaching experience within a public school system.
Special Requirements
  • Teachers working with students with emotional disabilities should be trained in MANDT methodology and receive additional training annually, as appropriate.
  • Teachers working with students on the autism spectrum should possess knowledge of evidence‑based practices, including Applied Behavior Analysis, alternative communication methods, modeling, and structured teacher supports such as visual scheduling and physical structure.
  • Teachers working with students with severe intellectual disabilities should have training in personal hygiene, specialized equipment, augmentative communication, seizure protocol, feeding protocol, body positioning, tracheotomy care, and suctioning.
