Staff members develop instructional programs for the diverse student population of over 24,000 in SCPS. As an early childhood special education teacher, you will provide individualized instruction in self‑contained classrooms for students whose needs cannot be met in a general education environment.
This position emphasizes collaboration and individualized support for students and families. You will share evidence‑based practices and contribute to a team focused on student success.
Essential Job Functions- Provides specialized instruction and educational planning for students whose needs cannot be met within the general classroom.
- Develops, implements, and annually reviews student Individualized Education Programs (IEP) according to federal, state and local procedures; maintains ongoing records of student performance and IEP implementation.
- Assists in screening, evaluating, and recommending placements of students for the division’s special education program.
- Serves as a member of an interdisciplinary team providing appropriate educational programs for students with disabilities.
- Holds periodic parent conferences and/or home visits.
- Complies with all special education procedures from the division‑wide Special Education Handbook and the Virginia State Regulations Governing Students with Disabilities.
Required
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Ability to obtain appropriate license(s) and/or endorsement(s) as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.
- An acceptable rating of prior teaching experience, as applicable.
Preferred
- Currently possesses a Virginia Collegiate Professional or Postgraduate Professional License within a specific endorsement area(s).
- Prior teaching experience within a public school system.
- Teachers assigned to students with emotional disabilities should have training in MANDT methodology and additional annual training as appropriate.
- Teachers assigned to students on the Autism Spectrum should have knowledge of evidence‑based practices such as Applied Behavior Analysis, alternative communication methods, modeling, and structured teacher supports.
- Teachers assigned to students with Severe Intellectual Disabilities should have training in personal hygiene, specialized equipment, augmentative communication, seizure protocol, feeding protocol, body positioning, tracheotomy care, and suctioning.
