Job DescriptionSpotsylvania County Public Schools is seeking a student‑focused, dedicated Special Education Para educator to assist teachers and other professional practitioners by providing instructional support in self‑contained classrooms with students who have special needs whose educational needs are not met by a general education environment.
Essential Job Functions- Assist students with the organization and completion of daily work assignments
- Assist in maintaining a safe, nurturing, and healthy atmosphere, which may include assisting students with social skill development, personal hygiene, toiletry needs/toilet training
- Follows established procedures for monitoring and redirecting student behavior when supervising small groups
- Maintains and organizes students instructional materials and/or cumulative files
- Administer and/or assist with preparing for various assessments for students as necessary
- Uses special skills (i.e. sign language, transliterating, advanced computer training) to assist in two‑way communication between the teacher and the student as necessary
- Performs additional non‑instructional duties including, but not limited to, cafeteria duty, bus duty, hall duty, and office duty
Required
- High School Diploma or GED
Preferred
- Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university
- A minimum of two (2) years working with children within an instructional, educational or related setting
- Special education teachers assigned to work with students with emotional disabilities should have been trained in MANDT methodology and should receive additional training, as appropriate, annually.
- Paraeducators assigned to Title I schools will be required to complete an additional assessment within a reasonable timeframe following hire or assignment.
