Step into a role where your expertise as a Sign Language Interpreter creates real impact for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. This contract position, situated near Fredericksburg, VA, calls for a passionate professional to provide vital interpreting services within local schools. You’ll play a key part in ensuring all students have equal access to education by facilitating communication between students, staff, and peers across various school settings.

What You’ll Do:
  • Deliver clear, accurate American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation during classes, school activities, meetings, and field trips.
  • Support students’ understanding of classroom instruction and active participation in the school community.
  • Adapt interpreting styles to match each student’s developmental and communication needs.
  • Collaborate with educators, special education teams, and related service providers to address student requirements.
  • Uphold confidentiality of all student and school-related information.
  • Offer insights to school staff on communication supports and potential barriers.
  • Attend IEP and staff meetings to provide essential interpreting services when needed.
  • Maintain professional standards in line with district policies.
What We’re Looking For:
  • Demonstrated fluency in ASL and professional sign language interpreting skills.
  • Current VQAS Level III or equivalent state-recognized certification (or minimum EIPA Performance Test score of 3.5 and EIPA Written Test completion).
  • Experience interpreting in a K-12 environment preferred.
  • Understanding of special education practices and the needs of deaf or hard of hearing students.
  • Strong collaboration and communication abilities.
  • High school diploma required; additional education or interpreter training highly valued.
  • Prior experience supporting students with IEPs is a plus.
