Job Summary/Basic Functions

The University of Mary Washington has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a University Museums Housekeeper. The University Museums housekeeper (part time) will help care for historic sites by cleaning staff and guests areas. Responsibilities include vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping; cleaning restrooms, kitchens, high touch surfaces, and windows as assigned; dusting; monitoring cleaning supplies and paper products. On request, the housekeeper may assist curators with collections care.

Working at Gari Melchers Home and Studio and the James Monroe Museum, this part-time position provides consistent, attentive, and thorough cleaning to preserve historic structures and collections, and maintain sanitary conditions for staff and guests. Responsibilities include vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping; cleaning restrooms, kitchens, high touch surfaces, and windows as assigned; dusting; monitoring cleaning supplies and paper products. On request, the housekeeper may assist curators with collections care.

Candidates with experience cleaning for private or commercial clients must understand safe use of cleaning tools, equipment and products; follow instructions and learn and apply recommendations for cleaning around historic collections. They will work independently; communicate verbally and in writing; and be able to flexibly adjust routine as cleaning needs require.

Hours will be 14 hours a week in the morning Monday through Friday, and occasional weekends. Reliable transportation required.

Required KSAs/Competencies/Qualifications
  • Knowledge of safe use of cleaning tools, equipment and products.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to monitor and organize cleaning supplies, tools, equipment and products.
  • Ability to follow instructions, both written and orally.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to be flexible in adjusting daily routine as cleaning needs require.
Required Experience
  • Experience cleaning for private or commercial clients.
Additional Considerations
  • High school graduate or GED.
  • Available to work morning hours, and occasional weekends.
  • Ability to learn and apply recommendations for cleaning around historic collections.
