Job Summary and Responsibilities

The Manager of Surgical Services is a Registered Nurse who assumes 24‑hour responsibility in supervising, coordinating and directing the activities of the Operating Room/CSR to deliver consistently high‑quality patient care.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing the daily operations of the Operating Room, including scheduling, staffing, productivity, and use of premium labor.
  • Maintaining the flow of the surgical schedule by coordinating staff, equipment and supplies.
  • Overseeing monthly staff schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels.
  • Acting as a steward of resources, monitoring and improving supply management and process improvement initiatives.
  • Analyzing and reporting statistical data for the peri‑operative service line.
  • Actively participating in performance improvement activities and ensuring regulatory compliance.
  • Meeting risk‑management best practices for OR and Surgical Services.
  • Protecting the rights of patients, staff and the facility by providing ethical healthcare and understanding legal guidelines.
  • Maintaining a high level of clinical expertise and adapting to new information, technology and trends in perioperative nursing practice.
  • Developing effective inter‑departmental relationships.
  • Owning environment of care standards and updates for the surgery department.
  • Participating in staff development, competency evaluation, performance reviews, counseling, orientation, in‑service training and continuing education.
  • Maintaining accurate and complete competency files and records required by hospital policy and regulatory agencies.
  • Assisting the physician with operating room procedures, setting up cases, and maintaining AORN guidelines and hospital policy compliance for patient safety, sterility, traffic flow and surgical counts.
  • Developing rapport with others and acting as a surgical liaison for families, support and information management.
  • Creating and maintaining an environment that results in above‑average satisfaction ratings from employees, patients and physicians.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent department‑specific experience (Required).
  • Charge Nurse or supervisory experience in Surgical Services (Preferred).
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (Required).
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Master’s degree (Preferred).
  • Registered Nurse with a current Virginia RN license (Required).
  • Current BLS certification for healthcare providers through the American Heart Association or CPR through American Red Cross (Required).
