Job Summary

This position is responsible for managing all day‑to‑day activities of the service and supporting the Associates who are providing care. In collaboration with the Director, the Nurse Manager provides leadership and direction in accordance with organizational and departmental philosophy and goals. The Nurse Manager assists the Director and Nurse Educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist in maintaining the highest degree of clinical and operational performance of the service and is accountable for daily operational activities on a 24‑hour basis.
This role demonstrates a commitment to quality, cost‑effective, customer‑focused service for patients, physicians, the public and co‑workers.
- Collaborate with the health care team to develop and implement a schedule and staffing plan and approve the final department schedule.
- Assist the Director in planning and managing the departmental budget.
- Oversee the education and orientation plan with the Clinical Nurse Specialist.
- Utilize the performance improvement process to identify opportunities for improving clinical effectiveness, practice, service operations, and standards.
- Collaborate with the Director and Nurse Educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist to develop and implement improvements and resolve customer satisfaction and quality issues.
- Provide effective communication and problem‑solving skills with staff, physicians, and ancillary departments; provide timely feedback and conflict resolution.
- Schedule a minimum of 8 hours per month during off‑hour shifts/weekends and facilitate timely staff and team meetings.
- Maintain records of communication to Associates and participate in department meetings and committees.
- Act as a resource to physicians and staff through clinical rounding and assessment of unit operations.
- Collaborate with ancillary departments to ensure availability of equipment and supplies and identify new technology for patient care.
- Perform other related duties as requested, including maintaining logs of rounding, reviewing associate competencies, and ensuring quality outcomes through chart reviews.
- Serve on call for the care center in collaboration with other Nurse Managers and the Director.
- Respond to requests for departmental reports, review them, and address issues appropriately.
- Oversee ordering, sign‑off, and inventory of department supplies, nutrition, and equipment.
- Maintain professional competencies by attending educational programs and participating in professional organizations.
- Mentor and coach associates; encourage open discussions, creative thinking, and evidence‑based practice.
- Monitor and maintain staff compliance to performance expectations; collaborate with HR to administer action plans and records of conference for all written, termination, and clinical issues.
- Participate in recruitment, selection, orientation, and retention processes; complete personnel action forms and justify requisitions.
- Ensure each Associate understands and practices the mission, vision, and values of Mary Washington Healthcare and participates in a team‑based practice and professional practice model.
- Conduct annual mission review with a SWOT analysis and quarterly performance reviews with associates, completing individual scorecards.
- Execute all other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school required.
- Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) preferred.
- Valid RN License from Virginia or a reciprocal compact state required.
- AHA BLS Provider CPR required at hire.
- AHA ACLS Provider required at hire.
- Professional Nursing Leadership Certification (ANCC or AONL) preferred.
- Minimum five years clinical nursing experience required.
- Minimum two years management experience required.
- Proficiency in verbal and written communication and in computerized systems.
- Experience with electronic health record systems and associated programs.
- Ability to work in a stressful environment and collaborate with physicians, staff, and Associates.
