Nurse Clinic Assistant

Primary Function:
To assist in the school clinic as students enter in a manner that establishes a professional but welcoming environment.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a high school diploma. CNA or LPN preferred. General knowledge of clinic protocol, procedures, equipment, and techniques. Knowledge of technology to complete tasks, send and receive emails, and create documents. Ability to prioritize and perform duties effectively and efficiently. Ability to establish and maintain professional, effective working relationships with other staff members, parents, and students. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

If the nurse assistant is not a registered nurse, and does not have hands on medical care, they will be trained by the school nurse. This training will include the following: CPR/First Aid/AED Training Emergency Anaphylaxis Training (Epi Pen) Diabetes Training to include use of glucometer, insulin administration, Glucagon administration Seizure Training (on line tutorial from the Epilepsy Foundation)

Reports To:

Building Level Administration (Principal / Assistant Principal) and Director of Operations

Placement on Salary Scale: depends on education and qualifications.

Responsibilities:
Greet students or parents who enter the clinic area. Assist with student registration into the nurse clinic. Obtain student's full name, forehead temperature, and ask student the nature of the problem/need. Check Power School for any medical alerts or conditions. Begin the clinic assessment ticket on paper for students with a signed pink pass or emergency. Assist with the flow of students in the clinic.

Determine if any student request is minor or if the need can be handled quickly (i.e. need a band-aid, hygiene needs, bathroom need, etc.) and direct student or supply the minor need if able. Re-direct students that arrive at the clinic that do not have a signed pink pass and/or are nonemergency to first go to their class for attendance purposes and then obtain a teacher pink pass to follow the school hall pass rule.

Assist nurse in notifying parent by phone call and or language line if needed to notify parent of concern or illness or student pick up. Obtain ice for the day from the cafeteria in the ice cooler if nurse requests. Fill ice packs for students. Assist nurse with entering immunization records into HOA system to determine student compliance with regulations.

Assist with letters or emails home regarding missing immunizations. Pull student health files from the clinic for the registrar as requested for admission, transfers, or other needs. Assist nurse in maintaining student health records in an orderly fashion per grade level. This may include re-filing, labeling, re-organizing file contents, or moving files. Assist with maintaining an aseptic environment in the clinic by wiping down the cot, chairs, or any supplies utilized on students with the proper cleansing agents.

Maintain confidentiality of any student illnesses or conditions per the HIPPAA protocols. Assist nurse in emergency situations and / or cover the clinic if nurse must attend to emergencies in the classrooms. Performs other duties deemed appropriate and necessary, assigned by building administration or requested by the school nurse.

Evaluation:
Performance on the job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
