Sheriff’s Deputy in Training – Full Time
Start of Salary: $53,269
Job OverviewThe Fredericksburg Sheriff’s Office seeks candidates for a full‑time Deputy in Training position. Responsibilities include securing the courthouse, serving civil processes, managing prisoner transports, and performing routine law enforcement tasks after certification. Applicants must complete department training and graduate from the academy. Interested individuals should submit an online application to be considered for testing.
Testing Process- Testing is only available upon invitation from Deputy Sheila Jones.
- Arrive 15 minutes prior to testing. Tardiness disqualifies you.
- Bring a valid driver’s license.
- Dress appropriately.
- No cellphones, smart watches, or any device that accesses the internet in the courthouse.
The testing process consists of:
Written Exam, Lawfit Assessment, Background investigation, Polygraph, Psychological test, Medical Examination, Conditional Offer, Oral review board, Interview with the Sheriff.
Day of Testing:
- Be punctual. Testing will be held at the Fredericksburg Sheriff’s Office, 701 Princess Anne Street, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.
- Be prepared. Review testing materials and videos on the website. Bring a valid driver’s license, water, and snacks.
- Dress appropriately. Arrive in fitness attire and athletic shoes. The written test takes about two hours and the physical test about four hours.
- Unauthorized items are not permitted; leave them in your vehicle.
Hired candidates will attend the April 2026 or July 2026 Law Enforcement Basic class at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy. Testing also creates an eligibility list for future vacancies.
Minimum Requirements- 21 years of age by completion of the academy.
- United States citizen.
- Valid driver’s license.
- High school diploma or GED.
- No more than two moving violations in the last two years.
- No convictions of DUI, eluding or leaving the scene of an accident in the last five years.
- No record of two or more DUIs.
- No driver’s license revocation or suspension in the last five years.
- No convictions of Class 1 or 2 misdemeanors involving moral turpitude.
- No convictions of misdemeanor sex offenses including sexual battery or consensual intercourse with a minor 15 or older.
- No convictions of domestic battery.
- Background investigation including fingerprint‑based criminal history records.
- Physical examination before conditional offer.
- Negative result on pre‑employment drug screening.
