What You’ll Do Automotive Mechanic I
  • Preventive Maintenance and Inspection
    City vehicles, light trucks, and equipment undergo regular preventive maintenance and service. Inspections are conducted to identify any maintenance requirements, safety issues, worn parts, leaks, or operational problems. Standard diagnostic tools and computerized systems are used to detect issues in mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, steering, suspension, exhaust, and other vehicle systems.
  • Repair and Diagnostics
    Perform routine to moderately complex repairs on vehicle parts such as brakes, tires, batteries, and more. Assistance is provided to higher-level mechanics with complex diagnostics and major repairs, including engine and transmission work. Test driving vehicles and operating equipment are part of the process to ensure repairs are successful.
  • Communication and Documentation
    Complete work orders, documenting services performed, and maintaining accurate maintenance records. Communication with supervisors, mechanics, departments, vendors, and suppliers is crucial for discussing repair status and service issues. The role also involves responding to basic road service calls, preparing seasonal equipment, and operating special equipment like snow trucks when licensed or trained.
Automotive Mechanic II
  • Preventive Maintenance and Repair
    Conduct preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on City vehicles and equipment. It includes using diagnostic tools to address mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues and performing repairs on components like brakes and tires. Vehicles are test-driven to confirm repairs.
  • Technical Support and Assistance
    Assist senior mechanics with major repairs and advanced diagnostics. Offer technical support to junior mechanics and communicate repair status and service needs with supervisors and vendors. This position will also respond to emergency repair calls.
  • Documentation and Safety Compliance
    Complete work orders, documenting maintenance activities, and maintaining clean and safe work environments. Employees order and verify parts, follow safety procedures, and perform state inspections if certified. They may also operate specialized equipment when licensed.
Automotive Mechanic III
  • Diagnostic and Repair Responsibilities
    Conducts advanced maintenance and repairs on diverse City vehicles and equipment, diagnosing complex mechanical and system issues with specialized tools. Performs significant repairs on key components such as engines and transmissions, using skills in welding and fabrication.
  • Technical Guidance and Coordination
    Offers technical support and guidance to junior mechanics, assists in training them on repair techniques and safety. Evaluates completed repairs for quality and decides whether repairs should be managed internally or outsourced.
  • Communication and Documentation
    Engages with supervisors and vendors regarding repair processes, manages detailed work orders and records. Handles emergency repair calls, ensuring swift and effective problem resolution.
