The CBC Atlantic Investigative Unit seeks an innovative and collaborative Senior Producer to lead our team of award-winning investigative journalists. Reporting to the Executive Producer of the Atlantic I-unit, you will drive investigative and enterprise story creation, ensuring content resonates with our audience across various platforms.

You will shape the editorial vision of the unit, juggling numerous story and project rollouts and landing them for maximum public service impact. You will lead weekly editorial meetings, vet scripts for video, audio and text, and bring knowledge and experience to thorny legal and JSP matters. You’ll collaborate with other leaders to foster an efficient and innovative team of investigative journalists.

You’ll network with programs and partners across the division, looking for opportunities to collaborate, co-produce, and leverage learning opportunities for the team. Your keen news sense and curiosity, understanding of investigative best practices and top tier editorial and organisational abilities will be crucial in driving the team’s work.

A natural collaborator, you will thrive on mentoring young journalists, navigating conflict and change, breaking down silos, and developing a representative and inclusive culture that is brought to bear on the stories undertaken by the unit as well. You will guide, coach, and support reporters, working closely with regional leaders. You’re an advocate for transparency and press freedom in the world around us, and bring that work to external institutions when possible.

This position will be based in one of our CBC stations in Atlantic Canada.

Your Responsibilities
  • Oversee daily editorial decisions in the Atlantic I-unit. Lead editorial meetings, organise rollouts, and provide editorial oversight to ensure our content is original, representative, responsive, relevant and impactful, and meets our journalistic standards.
  • Work with the Executive Producer to develop a strategy for the CBC Atlantic I-Unit with a focus on uncovering the best investigations and developing data, source and document driven content across all platforms.
  • Leadership in analysis of facts and information gathered and ability to draw conclusions or raise issues requiring further investigation.
  • Great understanding investigative techniques including Access to Information requests
  • Provide feedback and coaching to journalists to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest quality.
  • Assist with planning CBC-wide coverage for special projects and events.
  • Be in tune with story and video trends and audience habits.
  • Collaborate with other leaders to grow audiences on all CBC News platforms.
  • Work closely with community producers to deepen our community connections through programming, outreach and stakeholder sessions.
Your Profile
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of seven years of journalism experience. Demonstrated experience leading a team in a fast-paced daily multi-platform news environment.
  • Excellent understanding of investigative journalism best practices, research and production techniques.
  • Excellent journalistic and critical thinking skills, including knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
