Duties
Technicians are expected, within the scope of their work, to:

  • Exhibit a high degree of autonomy, self-direction and responsibility.
  • Analyze and interpret data; develop experiments, protocols, analytical methods, and experimental designs, and; understand the framework of the research program as a guide and develop research (rather than simply implement and adapt work).
  • Manage complex project activities with multiple goals and objectives, complex timelines, and competing deadlines.
  • Be able to supervise students, graduate students and research participants.
  • Act as a knowledgeable person who advises, discusses, plans and coordinates with others, and disseminates complex information within the science team, with members of other teams, with employees of other departments or organizations.
  • Demonstrate well-developed competencies.

Intent of the process
This is an internal advertised process that is meant to create a pool of partially qualified candidates at the EG-05 level. As such, the essential qualifications pertaining to qualities common to all EG-05 technician positions will be assessed through this process, and the essential science specific qualifications (knowledge) will be assessed when specific EG-05 vacancies need to be filled.

  • Graduation with a degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution with acceptable specialization in biology, or another discipline directly related to the duties of the position to staff, or an acceptable combination of education, training or experience. EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience designing, developing and testing research protocols and methods.
