Dr. James J. Hayden Memorial Scholarship for Future Educators (Freehold Township High School Students) – One (1) $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating FTHS senior who is pursuing a career in education.
This award, established in 2015, celebrates the life of Dr. James J. Hayden and his dedication to the students at Freehold Township High School throughout his 29-year career . Hayden began his career in education when the doors of FTHS opened in 1972. He served as a Social Studies teacher and AV coordinator, Social Studies Supervisor, Assistant Principal, and Principal. Dr.
Hayden worked tirelessly to foster the Patriot family, inspiring all students to excel in both academics and their individual talents during extracurricular activities.
Dr. Hayden was an avid reader and always considered himself a student. He earned his doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Rutgers University and worked as a Graduate Studies faculty member in the Education Leadership Program at Rider University. His dedication to teaching and learning showed his never-ending passion for education and student achievement.
Dr. Hayden had a positive influence on thousands of students in the FTHS community. It is the hope that the winner of this award will continue to inspire future students in the teaching and learning process.
Scholarship Criteria- The applicant must be a graduating Freehold Township High School senior, accepted into a four-year college, and pursuing a career in education. Proof of acceptance is required;
- The applicant must be in good academic standing with a B+ average. A copy of current transcript is required;
- The applicant must show their involvement in the Freehold Township High School community. Please submit a resume including the involvement in Freehold Township High School sponsored clubs, extra-curricular activities, sports, etc;
- The applicant must submit a letter of recommendation from a Freehold Township High School staff member attesting to the academic achievement and connection to the Freehold Township High School community;
- The applicant must submit an original work responding to:
What does teaching and learning mean to you? and What is the role of a teacher? Applicants chose one of the following formats to respond to the prompt: creative video, slide show presentation, digital interview, work of art or music with description, or a narrative writing.
The presentation of this award will be made at the Freehold Township High School Annual Senior Awards Ceremony. The scholarship check will be awarded to the student.
