JAMES T. GARY FOUNDATION ART SCHOLARSHIP AWARD (Freehold High School)
One (1) $500 scholarship awarded to a graduating senior from Freehold High School who will be attending college and majoring in Art. This award is in memory of internationally known sculptor, Jim Gary, who had graduated from Freehold High School in 1957. He was known for creating dinosaurs from automobile parts and other unique sculptures from recycled material. His work has been shown in many museums throughout the United States including the Smithsonian, Field Museum, Boston Children’s Museum as well as museums in Australia and Japan.
Currently, twenty-five of Mr. Gary's sculptures are on a long term loan at the Tallahassee Museum, Tallahassee, FL. In the local area, a sculpture entitled “Stegosaurs” is on display at the Monmouth Museum in Lincroft and at the Colts Neck Township Municipal Building there is a piece which was dedicated to those who lost their lives from Colts Neck in 9/11.
In 2007, Mr. Gary had the honor of being inducted into the Freehold Regional High School Hall of Fame.
- Scholarship is for a graduating senior from Freehold High School;
- Applicant must have been accepted for enrollment in a two or four year accredited institution of higher learning with a major in Art. Preference will be given to applicants in the field of three-dimensional art;
- Applicant should have a minimum of a “B” average;
- Please submit a short essay explaining your interest in the art field as well as outline your experience in the arts (e.g. background, classes, art shows, etc.). Also explain how art effects your life and what role it plays.
- Two letters of recommendation from either teachers or other artists.
Selection should be made by the Head of the Art Department at Freehold High School and one other teacher who has an art background.
