Structural Engineer, Civil Engineering
Under the supervision of the Design Standards Unit Manager and the Assistant Manager, the selected candidate will be responsible for reviewing structural and geotechnical design submissions to ensure compliance with applicable building codes and Port Authority technical standards. This role supports tenant-driven projects across transportation and related facilities and requires close coordination with Port Authority staff, tenants, and internal technical review teams.
Key Responsibilities and Duties Design Review & Technical Compliance- Download and review electronic TAA submissions and design audit packages
- Preview construction documents and assess submissions for completeness
- Analyze and review structural and geotechnical drawings, calculations, specifications, reports, and studies for compliance with applicable building codes and Port Authority standards
- Evaluate structural systems, foundations, and geotechnical elements associated with building design and construction at transportation and related facilities
- Identify code deficiencies, technical conflicts, and coordination issues across disciplines
- Coordinate review comments from multiple technical disciplines and prepare consolidated memoranda for transmission to Port Authority line departments
- Assign submissions to appropriate technical disciplines for detailed code review, as required
- Attend meetings with tenant Architects and Engineers of Record to discuss review comments and resolve outstanding issues
- Act as a liaison between Port Authority tenants, facilities staff, and in-house application reviewers to ensure a smooth and efficient workflow
- Communicate with Port Authority facilities staff to support processing of TAA submissions and design audit projects
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related discipline
- Minimum of five (5) years of diverse experience involving building structural and geotechnical codes, systems, and design review
- Demonstrated understanding of structural and geotechnical disciplines related to building design and construction of transportation and related facilities
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in the State of New York and/or New Jersey is required
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to effectively coordinate with tenants, consultants, facilities staff, and internal reviewers
- Sound technical judgment and strong attention to detail when reviewing complex submissions
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability and willingness to learn Port Authority and third-party software platforms (e.g., SharePoint, eBuilder)
- Organized, dependable, and capable of managing multiple concurrent reviews while meeting deadlines
- Work performed on-site in Jersey City, New Jersey, and/or remotely, as directed by the Port Authority.
- Standard work schedule is Monday through Friday; limited schedule adjustments may occur based on Port Authority operational needs.
