Mechanical Engineer
Job Description
The Mechanical Engineer designs and develops heavy moving systems and custom load-moving solutions from concept through production, using Solid Works and advanced analysis tools. This role supports both new product development and enhancements to existing products, ensuring that every design is robust, manufacturable, and optimized for demanding applications across industries such as construction, rigging, mining, offshore, aerospace, defense, renewable energy, academia, and OEMs.
The position combines detailed engineering work with hands-on involvement on the manufacturing floor, offering the opportunity to see designs come to life in a vertically integrated environment where everything is designed and manufactured onsite.
Responsibilities
* Use Solid Works to engineer, model, and detail components and assemblies for production, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all drawings and documentation.
* Maintain engineering documentation and records using PDM software, ensuring proper version control and traceability of design changes.
* Define manufacturing methods and workflows for components and assemblies using ERP software so that each part is produced efficiently and correctly.
* Support manufacturing by troubleshooting production concerns and resolving design-related issues in a timely and practical manner.
* Drive continuous improvement and corrective actions through the creation and management of Engineering Change Notices (ECNs).
* Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and engineering calculations to verify that designs can withstand the rigors of heavy-duty applications in construction, rigging, mining, offshore, and other demanding environments.
* Apply GD&T principles to drawings to clearly define tolerances and ensure proper fit, form, and function of parts and assemblies.
* Participate in peer review of designs, collaborating with other engineers to ensure that all products are best-in-class in terms of performance, manufacturability, and reliability.
* Collaborate closely with sales and manufacturing teams to develop practical, cost-effective solutions to customer problems and unique application requirements.
* Ensure that all designs are manufacturable using metal fabrication processes such as welding, machining, and heat treatment, and adjust designs as needed based on shop floor feedback.
* Contribute to both new product development projects and updates to existing designs, supporting a high volume of new designs each year.
* Use tools such as Solid Works Simulation, PTC Mathcad, and Microsoft Excel to support engineering analyses, calculations, and design documentation.
* Occasionally travel to customer sites, approximately 20 days per year or less, to support application reviews, installations, or troubleshooting as needed.
* Engage regularly on the shop floor to observe manufacturing processes, validate design intent, and work hands-on with production teams to bring designs into reality.
Essential Skills
* Bachelor's degree in an engineering-related field, preferably mechanical engineering.
* At least 2 years of Solid Works design experience creating detailed models and production-ready drawings.
* Experience working in a metal manufacturing environment, with practical exposure to fabrication processes.
* Proficiency with Solid Works, including 3D modeling and detailing for production.
* Finite Element Analysis experience, preferably using Solid Works Simulation, to validate structural performance of designs.
* Strong understanding of metal manufacturing processes such as welding, machining, and heat treatment.
* Working knowledge and practical application of GD&T for engineering drawings.
* Ability to perform engineering calculations using tools such as PTC Mathcad and Microsoft Excel.
* Ability to troubleshoot production issues and implement effective design changes and corrective actions.
* Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with engineering, sales, and manufacturing teams.
Additional
Skills & Qualifications
* Experience designing equipment or components for heavy-duty applications such as construction, rigging, mining, offshore, aerospace, defense, renewable energy, academia, or OEM environments.
* Experience participating in or leading peer design reviews to improve product quality and reliability.
* Familiarity with PDM systems for managing engineering documentation and revision control.
* Experience using ERP systems to define manufacturing routes, bills of materials, and production methods.
* Interest in new product development and continuous improvement, with a desire to work on both new designs and enhancements to existing products.
* Comfort working in a fast-paced environment that produces a high volume of new designs each year.
* Ability to occasionally travel to customer sites, around or less than 20 days per year, to support applications and customer needs.
* Motivation to see projects through from initial concept to final…
