Mackenzie Stuart is partnered with a fast-growing nutraceutical contract manufacturer seeking a skilled Senior Product Development Formulator/R&D Lead to join their team.
The Senior Product Development Formulator / R&D Lead is responsible for leading the development, optimization, and commercialization of dietary supplement formulations across multiple dosage and delivery forms (oil/water-based liquids, softgels, capsules, powders, and granulations). This role owns complex projects end-to-end—from concept through scale-up and technical transfer—while partnering closely with Sales, Marketing, Quality, Operations, and Purchasing to deliver manufacturable, compliant, and cost-effective products on time.

Job Responsibilities- Lead formulation strategy and technical execution for new product development and reformulation projects across multiple dosage forms.
- Translate product concepts and customer requirements into robust, scalable, and compliant formulations that meet performance, stability, sensory, and cost targets.
- Independently design and execute development plans, including bench trials, pilot trials, and verification batches.
- Own scale-up and technical transfer activities from lab to manufacturing, including process parameter definition, troubleshooting, and verification batch support.
- Drive root-cause investigations and corrective actions for formulation and process issues encountered during commercialization.
- Partner with Quality Assurance to ensure appropriate documentation packages for new formulas and changes (specifications, batch records, supporting data).
- Collaborate with Purchasing/Sourcing on raw material selection, alternate sourcing strategies, and supplier trials to ensure continuity and cost optimization.
- Serve as the technical point-of-contact for internal stakeholders (Sales/Marketing/Operations) regarding ingredient functionality, feasibility, and technical limitations.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior formulators and lab personnel.
- Lead and/or support QC/analytical testing as needed, including method selection and interpretation of data to inform formulation decisions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Nutrition/Dietetics, or related field required.
- 5+ years product development/formulation experience in dietary supplements (or closely related nutraceutical/food manufacturing environment)
- Demonstrated experience developing formulas across multiple dosage forms and supporting scale-up/commercialization.
- Strong understanding of ingredient functionality and natural product chemistry; able to troubleshoot formulation/process issues independently.
