Description:
The unit focuses on Labor and Delivery, catering to various obstetrical emergencies. The department handles an average of 255 births annually. Nurses are required to have experience with common diagnoses such as labor, preeclampsia, hypertension, obesity, gestational diabetes, and preterm labor. Nurses must be able to stabilize newborns and provide couplet care post-recovery. Responsibilities include circulating in the operating room and caring for clean gynecological cases.
Nurses are expected to titrate drips, specifically Pitocin and Insulin. There is a charge nurse who manages a full patient assignment with lesser acuity. Support roles are available through unit secretaries and CNAs. An OB hospitalist is available on-site 24/7, with additional pediatric support within a five-minute response time. Anesthesia is available during day shifts and can respond within 30 minutes for emergencies.
The unit employs remote monitoring technologies when needed. The unit operates on a self-staffing schedule, requiring weekend and holiday shifts every other to every third weekend, as well as holiday coverage every other year. On-call requirements involve 1-2 shifts per six-week period, with a callback time of 30 minutes. Floating to medical-surgical units may occur only in critical situations and would not involve a complete patient assignment.
Standard scrubs are provided, along with waterproof non-slip shoes. Department-specific orientation is conducted over up to three shifts.
