Crossing Guard
Job Goal:
Responsible for ensuring the safety of all students while crossing the streets.
- Checks traffic to determine the appropriate time to allow students to cross the street;
- Ensures that all drivers are warned of students crossing the streets;
- Establishes a positive relationship with the students in accordance with the training provided by the Freeport Police Department and Freeport School District;
- Maintains a positive atmosphere while providing appropriate behavioral management for groups of students;
- Prepares for and follows procedures outlined in in-service training provided by the Freeport Police Department and other entities;
- Works with the Freeport School District to evaluate and monitor crossing areas for safety and serviced student numbers;
- Ability to use a hand-held stop sign, flashlight, narrowcade and sandbag if required;
- Ability to walk short distances and stand for periods up to one hour at a time;
- Ability to hear a wide variety of sounds, including traffic noise and vehicle horns at a distance of 100 feet;
- Ability to see at long distances and at close range;
- Ability to work in extreme and inclement weather;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to hold 2# sign for periods of 30 seconds to 2 minutes above head;
Must be able to stand in all weather for up to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
