Lab Technician
The Catalyst R&D Laboratory Technician will support a team of research scientists within the Catalyst R&D Group by synthesizing catalysts and generating critical characterization data. This data is essential for the development and evaluation of novel polyolefin catalysts utilized in the Packaging & Specialty Plastics business. Responsibilities:
- Operate and maintain the catalyst analytical laboratory and fluidized bed reactor (after training), supporting catalyst development projects for plastics applications.
- Utilize analytical instruments such as gas chromatography, elemental titration systems, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and perform sample preparation for gas chromatography.
- Handle air- and moisture-sensitive catalyst samples and chemicals using a nitrogen glovebox for proper storage and manipulation.
- Accurately measure catalyst samples and reactants down to 0.001 gram precision using an analytical balance.
- Document, analyze, and communicate experimental results; maintain detailed laboratory records.
- Complete daily process safety checklists and perform thorough process walkthroughs to ensure safe operations.
- Troubleshoot process issues to achieve optimal reactor conditions; perform reactor maintenance including tubing and valve replacement, pump repairs, vessel cleaning, and instrument replacement.
- Package and dispose of waste according to RCRA regulations.
- Collaborate with the lab coordinator and communicate any process deviations or issues promptly.
- Maintain general housekeeping standards in the laboratory.
Skills and
Qualifications:
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting abilities.
- Exceptional attention to detail and critical thinking skills.
- Proficient in laboratory software systems and Microsoft Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.).
- Solid math skills and familiarity with chemical properties such as boiling points, flash points, vapor pressure, molecular weight, and density.
- Experience with flammable and pyrophoric materials and their safe handling.
- Ability to maintain the integrity of air- and moisture-sensitive reagents.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with colleagues at all levels.
- Ability to work independently and demonstrate motivation, reliability, and interpersonal effectiveness.
- Accountable for the quality and accuracy of experimental data.
Safety Requirements:
- Ability to perform heavy lifting, up to 50 lbs.
- Compliance with PPE requirements as specified for the work location.
Work Schedule:
- 4 days per week, 10 hours per shift, with occasional work outside standard hours.
Minimum Requirements:
- Associate's degree in a technical discipline with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 OR
- At least 2 years of relevant work experience (e.g., laboratory technician, reactor operator, chemistry technician, computer science, etc.)
