Position Summary

The Resident Assistant (RA) is a live-in, part-time position responsible for fostering a safe, inclusive living environment. RAs work collaboratively with the Residential Community Coordinator, Housing Staff, Facilities, and the Dean of Students to promote the university’s mission. RAs must be full-time SFBU students, dedicating approximately 10–15 hours per week, with housing provided as compensation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Support a group of residents ranging from 12 to 22 students.

Conduct regular check-ins with residents to ensure they are connected, aware of resources, and supported.

Promote campus programs and participate in community-building activities.

Address facilities issues reported by residents and follow up to ensure resolution.

Host social programs and facilitate engagement in campus events.

Participate in orientation, move-in/move-out, and RA training sessions.

Maintain communication with university staff via email and meetings.

Facilitate roommate agreements and conduct safety checks.

Serve as a first point of contact for minor conflicts, escalating serious concerns appropriately.

Enforce housing policies and participate in emergency procedures.

Document incidents and maintain confidentiality per FERPA and university policies.

Commit approximately 10–15 hours weekly, with additional hours compensated according to law.

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled full-time as an undergraduate or graduate student at SFBU.

GPA of 2.5 or higher for undergraduates; 3.0 or higher for graduate students, unless otherwise specified.

Good academic and conduct standing.

Ability to serve for the full academic year and complete training.

Residency in assigned facilities and maturity in decision-making.

Compliance with housing agreements and safety protocols.

Ability to handle sensitive information professionally.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong communication and leadership skills.

Ability to work with diverse teams.

Approachable and patient demeanor.

Knowledge of campus resources (preferred).

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Primarily office-based; physical demands may include lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, and sitting. Occasional long periods of sitting or standing.

Salary and Compensation

Housing is provided as primary compensation. Additional hours are paid at $20/hour for hours beyond 10–15 weekly, in accordance with California law. The estimated value of housing is approximately $1,200/month.
