Introduction

YOU MUST BE AN ALAMEDA COUNTY EMPLOYEE TO APPLY FOR THIS RECRUITMENT. THIS IS A NEW PROMOTIONAL ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended. Qualified applicants must be current county employees and have completed the equivalent of six months of continuous service following a regular appointment in the Alameda County classified service (non‑classified includes the District Attorney’s Office, the Medical Center, and the Superior Court) by the last day of filing.

A regular appointment does not include provisional, TAP (Temporary Assignment Pool), or STEP‑UP appointments. Qualified bilingual persons who speak English and are also fluent in:
Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Laotian, Korean, Mien, Tagalog, Amharic, Farsi, Dari, Tigrigna, Russian, Romanian or Sign Languages are especially encouraged to apply. There is an additional biweekly compensation for persons in positions designated bilingual. Qualified candidates may be tested to demonstrate language proficiency. Applications must be submitted to the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.

Description

THE AGENCY

The Alameda County Library provides library services from ten libraries in the cities of Albany, Dublin, Fremont, Newark, and Union City and the unincorporated communities of Castro Valley and San Lorenzo. The Alameda County Library also provides additional services through Mobile and Outreach Services, Education and Literacy Services, and Social Justice Services. The County Library was established in 1910 and is governed by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.

The Alameda County Library Advisory Commission advises County Librarian, Cynthia Chadwick, and the Board of Supervisors on library services. The County Library is funded primarily by local property taxes, with additional revenue from State grants and contracts with cities for additional open hours and services. The Board of Supervisors allocates a portion of utility users and business license tax which is collected only in the unincorporated areas of the County to the Library for service to the unincorporated areas.

THE POSITION

This flexibly staffed class series specification describes the entry‑level classification in the Librarian series. Under general supervision, provides professional services for library members and assists in the operation of a library. Librarian I may be assigned to public services or technical services. Also performs related work as required. This is the entry‑level classification in the Librarian flex series located in the County Library.

Librarian I is the entry‑level position in the professional librarian series and is expected to learn all aspects of professional Librarian work as they are exposed to multiple areas of the profession. The Librarian I is distinguished from a Librarian II according to the amount of supervision given and responsibility delegated. Employees in the Librarian I classification are expected to develop the necessary knowledge and abilities of professional librarian work to flexibly promote to the higher‑level classification of Librarian II after one year of full‑time experience in the Librarian I classification.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Pattern I –

    Education:

    Possession of a master’s degree in library science.
  • Pattern II –

    Education:

    Possession of a bachelor’s degree AND

    Experience:

    Equivalent of eighteen (18) months of full‑time experience as a Library Technician or higher‑level library classification in the Alameda County Library system.

    Education:

    Possession of a bachelor’s degree AND

    Experience:
