What To Expect

The team is seeking a Polymer Materials Engineer to focus on the fundamental, first principles relationships between paint materials, processes, and appearance. This position will align our paint materials development efforts with future paint manufacturing and process strategies.

What You'll Do
  • Serve as the subject matter expert for paint systems processing and optimization.
  • Support ongoing material application processes for metal pre-treatment, e-coat, top-coat, and powder coats both within Tesla and at vendors.
  • Provide technical support to the quality and manufacturing teams regarding processing issues.
  • Support process validation for all new coating processes.
  • Establish first principles relationships between every process stop and final paint appearance.
  • Work with suppliers and Tesla manufacturing teams to develop new paint processing technologies that reduce energy consumption, capital expenses, and floor space requirements. Lead these efforts from concept to production.
  • What You'll Bring
    • Degree in Polymer, Coatings, or Materials Engineering, or equivalent experience.
    • Fundamental knowledge of polymers and polymer chemistry.
    • 10+ years of experience working with paint application processes.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of paint application processes.
    • Experience in managing process optimization, paint shop upgrades, and modifications.
    • Experience with standard analytical tools (FTIR, DSC, Rheometry, DMA, etc.).
    • Thorough knowledge of paint processing fundamentals.

    Expected Compensation: $84,000 - $180,000 per year plus cash and stock awards, and benefits.

    Pay may vary depending on individual factors such as location, experience, and skills. Additional elements may be included in the total compensation package. Details will be provided if an employment offer is made.
