What To Expect

Tesla is looking for a Metrology Engineer who will be responsible for maintaining, improving, and analyzing in-line and offline PV cell metrology for R&D, pilot line, and manufacturing. Accurate characterization is critical to making good, reliable PV cells, diagnosing yield loss and low efficiency, and developing our next generation cell technology. Additionally, you will take on more complex measurement and failure analysis where clean signal and interpretation are challenging.

You will also have opportunity to expand into cell device fabrication. Up to 30% travel.

• Setup measurement recipes for characterizing PV cells including solar simulator IV, quantum efficiency, electroluminescence, photoluminescence, automated optical inspection and lifetime measurements
• Work with accredited labs, engineers and suppliers to establish calibration standards and product/component standards
• Troubleshoot calibration and measurement errors in-house as well as metrology disagreements with suppliers
• Train users, certify metrology, and replace consumables while maintaining high lab uptime
• Propose and build or source new metrology and metrology improvements
• Develop code and data pipelines to analyze measurements and images

• Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Optics, Photovoltaics, or equivalent experience
• Attentive to detail with thorough understanding of measurement, calibration, calibration standards, statistical variation and gauge R&R
• Hands on experience building either metrology or experimental setups from either PV, Semiconductor, or related industry
• Ability to diagnose and pinpoint experimental and metrology issues and quickly solve them in a production environment
• Ability to use python and scripts to set up automated data processing
• Good understanding of spectroscopy, ellipsometry, FTIR, Raman
• Understanding of PV and fundamental semiconductor theory
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience with image processing, image processing libraries, and training machine learning/AI for defect recognition
• Experience imaging surface topography with tools such as confocal microscopy or optical profilometry

$130,400 - $195,600/annual salary + cash and stock awards + benefits

Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job‑related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered.
