Position: GaN Process Development Engineers (GaN Laser Diodes)

Process Development Engineers
- GaN Laser Diodes

Blu Glass is a global leader in advanced GaN laser diodes, leading breakthrough technologies such as distributed feedback (DFB) lasers and high-power master-oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) lasers in the visible spectrum. Advances in quantum sensing, quantum computing, electronic materials processing, medical, biotech, and defense/aerospace applications drive demand for innovation in visible laser diodes, and improvement to laser performance at the fundamental level.

About the job

The Process Development Engineers will develop semiconductor wafer fabrication processes for next-generation GaN laser diodes. They will take ownership of wafer fabrication processes, combining hands-on expertise with analytical problem-solving to demonstrate, improve, and implement manufacturable wafer processes.

These roles offer the opportunity to work on cutting-edge GaN laser diode technology with direct impact on emerging applications such as quantum sensing and advanced medical devices. As part of a small team, you will play a key role in scaling processes from development to production in a fast-growing photonics company.

We are hiring multiple Process Development Engineers and are especially interested in candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas:

2.Thin-film deposition and optical coating and design (evaporation, sputter, PECVD, ALD)

Preferred candidates may also have experience in the following:

  • Wafer thinning (grind, polish)
  • Wafer scribe, facet cleave, laser bar coating
  • Mask design and integration
70% - GaN Wafer Fab Process Development:

Each Process Development Engineer will lead hands-on wafer processing and optimization. In these roles, you will own equipment, use DOE to optimize processes, and apply SPC, parameter tracking, and data analysis to identify and address out-of-control conditions. You will lead structured problem-solving efforts such as 8D and DMAIC, and partner with equipment engineering to support OEE and TPM standards. You will also gain broad exposure to and support all aspects of laser diode fabrication.

25% - Technical Program Leadership:

You will stay current with state-of-the-art principles for advancing performance in front-end processing. You will establish new processes for state-of-the-art laser diode projects. Identify, purchase, and qualify the equipment necessary to support product development roadmaps. Analyze and report key performance metrics to project teams and management.

5% - Organizational Support:

Support fab operations and organizational needs, including coordination with technicians, issuing travelers, and assisting with procurement.

Background:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or similar with 2-5+ years of experience in an industrial environment, or PhD with equivalent experience.
  • Experience in semiconductor processing and development, along with a basic understanding of epitaxy, downstream fabrication, and testing, is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership and the capacity to direct and influence colleagues across multiple departments and geographies.
  • Strong engineering fundamentals with a methodical approach to problems using statistics and numerical methods.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis software such as JMP, Python, R, etc.
  • Development and execution of technical research projects.
  • Ability to "wear many hats" on a small team in a dynamic start-up environment.
  • A good candidate will have high-quality communication, self-motivation, flexibility, and will be comfortable with ambiguity with the capacity to solve problems in non-traditional ways.
Additional Input:

We are hiring at multiple levels depending on experience. Level and responsibilities will be calibrated accordingly.

The Blu Glass GaN Process Development Engineer positions are based at our wafer fab in Fremont, CA. On-site, hands-on work is required, with occasional off-site work. Due to export control regulations, candidates must qualify as a "US Person" (U.S. citizen, permanent resident, refugee, or asylee).
