The City of Fremont's City Attorney's Office is recruiting for Paralegal. VIEW OUR RECRUITMENT BROCHURE. The City Attorney’s Office provides legal advice to all City Departments, the City Council and all Boards and Commissions. In addition, the City Attorney’s Office provides risk management services through the Risk Management Division.
The PositionThe Paralegal position is responsible for the preparation and management of complex legal documents and performs specialized legal administrative services at the direction of the professional staff in the City Attorney's office. The Paralegal works independently within prescribed guidelines and protocol to plan, organize, and complete assignments, which are reviewed upon completion. This is a full‑time in‑office position (8 am‑5 pm).

Class SpecificationDefinition:
Under direction provides a variety of highly responsible paralegal and administrative services to support the activities of the City Attorney’s Office; performs related duties as assigned.
This class is characterized by the responsibility to provide a variety of specialized legal and administrative services not requiring the licensing of an attorney. The position supports legal research, document preparation and case file management, and may also assist in specialized areas such as liability, risk management or workers’ compensation. The Paralegal works independently within established guidelines and exercises sound judgment in handling complex legal assignments.
The position requires independent judgment and thorough knowledge of applicable legal procedures, laws and policies. Discretion and tact are essential when handling confidential or sensitive documents and information. This classification is distinguished from the Deputy City Attorney I position in that it does not require a law degree and performs less complex legal tasks.
- Prepare, edit and process legal documents, including pleadings, contracts, ordinances, memos, and correspondence.
- Conduct legal and factual research and compile findings for review by attorneys.
- Review legal documents to determine required response times and maintain case tracking systems.
- Organize, maintain, and update legal files, including litigation and administrative case files.
- Assist in reviewing contracts and legal documents for accuracy and completeness.
- Assist attorneys with the preparation for court hearings, depositions, and administrative proceedings.
- Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Adhere to customer service philosophy with both internal and external customers and demonstrate skill in establishing a strong and positive image of the department and City.
- File court documents and attend court hearings as assigned.
