Closures Engineering Technician

The Closures Engineering Technician supports the development, testing, and validation of mechanical and electrical closure systems by executing tests, assembling and wiring fixtures, and assisting engineers with instrumentation and data acquisition. This role combines hands-on lab work, electrical diagnostics, and mechanical fabrication to ensure closure systems meet performance and reliability requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and execute tests on closure systems, including performing inspections, conducting maintenance, and implementing retrofits using multimeters, force gauges, and torque wrenches.
  • Document and report issues identified during tests or inspections in a clear and organized manner.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and electrical issues discovered during testing.
  • Support engineers with instrumentation and data acquisition activities, ensuring accurate and reliable test data.
  • Assist and learn from other technicians and engineers to continuously improve technical skills and knowledge.
  • Assemble and wire test fixtures, including harnesses and related components, to support closure system testing.
  • Participate in organizing and maintaining the lab, ensuring efficient use of equipment and workspace.
  • Apply an understanding of Ohm's law and related electrical principles when performing diagnostics and test setups.
  • Use a bandsaw and drill press to fabricate components and fixtures required for testing.
  • Perform electrical diagnostics on low-voltage and high-voltage components, including CAN-based systems.
  • Carry out mechanical tear-downs and inspections of closure-related components and assemblies.
  • Use hand tools and standard lab equipment to support test execution, maintenance, and inspections.

Essential Skills

  • Strong attention to detail with clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical problem-solving skills and strong organizational abilities.
  • Understanding of working principles of common closure operations, testing, and characterization.
  • Experience using standard lab and test equipment such as power supplies and data acquisition systems (DAQs).
  • Ability to solder, crimp, and read wiring diagrams.
  • Basic experience with Microsoft Office tools, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Experience working with both high-voltage and low-voltage components.
  • Previous experience with CAN communication.
  • Experience working on vehicle-level systems.
  • Ability to perform electrical diagnostics using multimeters and related tools.
  • Capability to perform mechanical tear-downs, inspections, and assembly work.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with hand tools, force gauges, torque wrenches, and other standard test instruments.
  • Experience with harness assembly and troubleshooting.
  • Comfort working with mechanical systems that may involve heavier components.
  • Understanding of basic electrical theory, including Ohm's law.
  • Experience supporting engineers with instrumentation and data acquisition in a lab environment.
  • Ability to learn quickly from other technicians and engineers and adapt to new test methods and tools.

Work Environment

This role operates primarily in a lab and test environment focused on closure systems for vehicles. The technician uses standard lab and test equipment such as multimeters, power supplies, data acquisition systems, force gauges, torque wrenches, bandsaws, and drill presses, as well as hand tools for assembly, wiring, and tear-down activities. Work involves both electrical and mechanical tasks, including handling low-voltage and high-voltage components and working with vehicle-level systems and CAN communication.

The environment emphasizes organization, safe use of tools and equipment, and close collaboration with engineers and other technicians. Standard office software such as Outlook, Excel, and Word supports documentation, reporting, and communication.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.00 - $35.00/hr.
