Position: CNA / Full time / AM,PM,NOC Shifts

FUNCTION

Cares for residents under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse or a licensed practical/vocational nurse.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Freedom from illegal use of drugs
  • Freedom from use of and effects of use of drugs and alcohol in the workplace
  • Anyone found guilty by a court of law of abusing, neglecting, or mistreating individuals in health‑care related setting is ineligible for employment in the position
  • Education and/or experience:
    Minimum high school diploma or GED, or one to three months related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred
  • Certificates, licensees, registrations:
    Graduate of a state‑approved nursing assistant training program and passed a state‑approved competency examination (written and skills) within 120 days of employment; name entered into state nurse aide registry
LANGUAGE SKILLS

Must be able to express self adequately in written and oral communication and to communicate effectively in an interdisciplinary care setting with residents, families and staff members.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add and subtract three‑digit numbers; calculate percentage of whole; measure in cubic centimeters (cc’s); measure in feet and inches. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement, volume, length and height.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Take and record vital signs
  • Measure and record height and weight
  • Calculate and record weight gain or loss
  • Calculate and record fluid intake and output
  • Care for the resident’s environment
  • Recognize abnormal changes in body functioning and report such changes to a supervisor
  • Care for residents when death is imminent
  • Make routine rounds on each assigned resident every two hours
  • Bath 9 residents
  • Assist with grooming, including mouth care
  • Dress residents
  • Assist with toileting
  • Assist with eating and hydration
  • Use proper feeding techniques
  • Calculate and record percentage of meal eaten
  • Observe resident’s skin when giving care and report changes to licensed nurse
  • Provide skin care
  • Transfer, position and turn residents
  • Meet residents’ mental health and social service needs
  • Modify own behavior in response to resident’s behaviors
  • Allow residents to make personal choices
  • Provide and reinforce other behaviors consistent with the resident’s dignity
  • Use the resident’s families as a source of emotional support
  • Contribute to the resident’s assessment (MDS/CAA) and the plan of care
  • Provide nursing rehabilitation/restorative nursing services
    • Promote resident’s ability to adopt and adjust to living as independently as possible
    • Train the resident in self‑care according to the resident’s abilities
    • Train the resident in the use of assistive devices for transferring, walking and mobility
    • Maintain range of motion; proper turning and positioning in bed and chair
    • Provide bladder and bowel retraining
    • Instruct the resident on the care and use of prosthetic and orthotic devices
    • Incorporate training and skill‑practice activities which include repetition, physical or verbal cueing and task segmentation
  • Care for residents with dementia
    • Know how to respond to residents’ behaviors
    • Allow residents to make personal choices
    • Provide and reinforce other behavior consistent with residents’ dignity
    • Use the resident’s families as a source of emotional support
    • Demonstrate a basic understanding of behavior and functional symptoms associated with dementia by providing interventions and treatments to help reduce these symptoms
    • Use modification in the presentation of activities of daily living to maintain and maximize resident competencies and function
    • Use effective intervention techniques to address behavioral concerns
    • Act as a facilitator for activity programming
    • Demonstrate effective communication techniques for persons with dementia
  • Provide non‑resident care including, but not limited to
    • Washing wheelchairs
    • Cleaning soiled utility areas
    • Cleaning nurses’ station
    • Cleaning shower and whirlpool rooms
    • Cleaning kitchen areas on the nursing unit
