Overview
Sound Thinking is developing an advanced magnetic field sensor package for weapons detection. We seek an Engineering Scientist with expertise in physics-based modeling and simulation to drive forward and inverse modeling tools, generate synthetic data, support rapid hardware prototyping, and reconcile simulations with laboratory and field observations across diverse noise environments.
Role OverviewYou will develop and extend physics-based forward models for magnetic field simulations, design magnetic moment source models for synthetic data, co-develop Python-based simulation APIs, and work with laboratory measurements to translate empirical data into software models. You’ll validate models against lab and field data, derive sensor performance thresholds, and contribute to inversion workflows to fit observed data.
Responsibilities- Develop and extend physics-based forward modeling code for magnetic field simulations.
- Design and implement magnetic moment source models for synthetic data generation.
- Co-develop Python-based simulation APIs and supporting data structures.
- Characterize source magnetic moments through laboratory measurements.
- Translate empirical data into software class instances and compute synthetic magnetic field models at various sensor locations.
- Apply frequency-dependent calibrations to time-series data.
- Validate models by comparing synthetic outputs with experimental, lab, and field data; recommend software refinements to improve fidelity.
- Derive sensor sensitivity and noise-level requirements from model insights.
- Co-develop data inversion workflows to constrain magnetic moment models to fit observed data.
- Collaborate with engineering, data science, and product development teams.
- MS or PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related field (or Bachelor’s degree with substantial relevant experience; equivalent experience considered).
- 3+ years of scientific programming experience (Python preferred).
- Strong foundation in magnetics, electromagnetics, and magnetometry; and time-series analysis.
- Hands-on laboratory skills for magnetic characterization.
- Experience developing software in a collaborative team environment.
- Ability to translate lab measurements into software models.
- Experience with inverse modeling (numerical optimization) techniques.
- Familiarity with sensor system development and signal processing.
- Background in statistical methods for model validation.
- Experience with simulation frameworks or computational electromagnetics tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS Maxwell, or custom solvers).
- Demonstrated ability to reconcile synthetic data with noisy laboratory/field data.
- Proficiency with Git Hub, code review practices, and repository management.
- Experience communicating technical results to multi-disciplinary teams and non-technical stakeholders.
