Assistant Chef
The Human Services Department (HSD) of the City of Fremont is recruiting an Assistant Chef to join the crew at the City‑operated Age Well Center at Lake Elizabeth. Under direction of the Chef/Food Services Manager, the Assistant Chef will help prepare, cook, serve and clean up a diverse lunch menu for seniors and assist with occasional catering engagements. The Assistant Chef may also substitute for the Chef/Food Services Manager in their absence.
AssistantChef Class Specification Essential Functions
- Prepare food and coordinate food service to meet participant specifications, including ethnic and vegetarian cuisine.
- Ensure kitchen volunteers/staff adhere to standards, procedures, department rules and sanitation requirements.
- Participate in receiving and inventory of ordered food and kitchen supplies.
- Assist in all aspects of meal preparation, set up, serving, and breakdown of the food serving line.
- Maintain kitchen and food service equipment, ensuring dishes, flatware, pots, pans, and equipment are clean and properly stored.
- Monitor food temperatures and storage practices, ensuring proper food safety.
- Oversee use of kitchen knives and equipment such as grills, ovens, steamers and warmers during preparation.
- Notify Chef/Food Services Manager of equipment maintenance and repair needs.
- Receive and respond to customer requests, gathering public feedback.
- Purchase necessary foodstuffs and supplies from off‑site locations and maintain inventory.
- Prepare for and cook outdoor BBQs (seasonal).
- Work with Chef and Program Coordinator to recommend new meal options.
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge: Health and Safety Standards in food preparation; basic arithmetic; foods commonly used in quantity meal preparation; kitchen cleaning techniques.
Skills: Use of knives, scissors, and other kitchen implements.
Abilities: Prepare foods per written and oral instructions; accurately measure ingredients; operate specialized kitchen equipment; develop and maintain cooperative relations with diverse individuals; substitute for the Chef/Food Services Manager as needed. Physical and mental capacity required to work under job conditions.
Education/
Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that provides necessary knowledge and skills. Eighteen (18) months of experience in food preparation in a quantity food services facility, or course work in a culinary program plus six months experience may be substituted.
Licenses/Certificates: Valid Class C California Driver’s License and California Food Handler Certificate with a negative TB test required prior to employment.
Physical and Environmental DemandsCertain duties include frequent walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 25 lb. Operations occur both indoors and outdoors, with exposure to extreme temperatures, heat, cold, noise, and chemicals. Driving is required.

Selection ProcessThe first review of applications will be on December 1, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. (PT). Oral panel interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of December 15.
