Position: Classified - Educational Sign Language Interpreter (Middle School)

Educational Sign Language Interpreter (Middle School)

Starting Date: Aug 12, 2026

Location: Middle School

Schedule: 7.5 hours per day, Student Days

Reports To: Director of Special Education / Building Administrator

Responsibilities

Basic:

  • Provide interpreting and support services to Deaf or Hard of Hearing students in inclusive, mainstreamed or self-contained settings.
  • Facilitate communication between students, teachers, peers, families and the school community to ensure equitable access to instruction and activities.

Frequent:

  • Facilitate communication for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in all school settings using the student’s preferred communication mode.
  • Discuss the interpreter’s role with general education teachers.
  • Provide teachers with information on the physical environment and accessibility.
  • Plan interpreting with educators and interpret extracurricular activities when requested.
  • Provide academic support under the supervision of the Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
  • Attend staff meetings as appropriate.
  • Comply with NDE Rule 51 guidelines.
  • Participate as a member of the IEP team and contribute to student language/communication needs assessments.
  • Complete required paperwork on time and support the implementation of IEP goals, accommodations, and modifications.
  • Maintain current professional knowledge through continuing education and professional development hours.
  • Develop and maintain a positive rapport with students and a professional working relationship with staff and administration.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student, colleague, and parent information per district policies and regulations.
  • Adhere to the code of ethics of interpreting and district policies.
  • Serve as a positive role model for staff and students and refer parents to teachers or administrators if concerns arise.
  • When not actively interpreting, provide general classroom assistance or instructional support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher or administrative staff.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Must meet NDE Rule 51 criteria for sign language interpreters.
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or completion of an interpreter preparation program preferred.
  • Driver’s license required;
    First Aid/CPR certification desired.
  • Previous work experience as an Educational Sign Language Interpreter desired.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Understanding of basic reading and math skills.
Compensation and Benefits
  • $24.25–26.77 per hour, depending on experience.
  • $26.77–29.56 per hour for bilingual (English/Spanish) interpreters, depending on experience.
