POWER PLANT LAB ASSISTANT
Wage Range: $37.58 - $52.88
NATURE OF WORK
This is responsible skilled and technical work in the analysis of chemical processes in support of a municipal electric power plant.
Work involves a variety of duties associated with power generation. systems. Work also includes laboratory analysis of water and steam samples to support power plant chemistry control programs; preparation and analysis of raw coal and pulverizer fineness samples; operation of water treatment equipment, water analysis panels, and boiler steam cycle chemical feed equipment for power or generation units. An employee in this classification is expected to operate with minimum supervision within the policies, procedures and regulations.
Supervision is received from an administrative superior with performance reviewed through results obtained.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following examples of work are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
* Assists Management with planning, design, testing, and operational analysis. Prepares reports, applications, Request for proposals (RFP), data bases, and other technical operational analysis relating to various Environmental Protection Agency, Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy regulations.
* Prepares quarterly reports and documentation; arranges for transportation of chemical wastes for off-site disposal.
* Assists in monitoring ongoing Federal and State environmental regulations; prepares reports to management and State and Federal agencies; establishes and maintains effective working relationships with City, State, and Federal agencies, contractors, and general public.
* Writes and presents technical reports. Prepares environmental forms, reports, and logs.
* Analyzes water and steam samples to support power plant chemistry programs; prepares and analyses raw coal and pulverizer fineness samples; assists in operation of water treatment equipment, water analysis panels, and boiler steam cycle chemical feed equipment for power generating units.
* Assists in sample collections and record keeping in order to ensure compliance with all power plant permit requirements including NPDES discharge permit requirements and assists in maintaining SDS for chemicals utilized in the power plant.
* Assists in chemical related safety in the laboratory and throughout the plant; assist plant management comply with established utility safety standards.
* Monitors plant compliance with state and federal regulations; performs quality assurance/control activities, collects data,
* Notifies management of any violation of regulations; ensures that discharge water meets with requirements of the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy NDEE permit; operates monitor and maintains equipment used in water purification activities; works with water softener, reverse osmosis and demineralizer systems to purify water for boilers.
* Performs other work which is consistent with the essential functions of the job.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
* Knowledge of laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology and test procedures.
* Ability to read and interpret necessary procedures and guidelines.
* Ability to safely operate Power Industrial Vehicles (PIV) including but not limited to forklift, pallet jack, scissor lift, skid steer, crane and aerial lift devices.
* Ability to read and interpret state and federal environmental rules and regulations.
* Ability to exercise sound judgment; to perform routine mathematical calculations.
* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management staff and other employees.
* Ability to deal with outside vendors and to train assigned personnel; to work independently in the absence of supervision.
* Ability to learn and utilize various computer software programs necessary to perform the job.
* Employees must be willing to be trained on and retain the knowledge to safely work in a complex electric generating plant.
* Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent supplemented by college-level courses in chemistry including the following or equivalent: general chemistry, quantitative analysis/chemistry, organic chemistry, physics or physical science; completion of a two-year associate's degree program in environmental systems; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the desirable knowledge abilities, and skills.
