The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated and hardworking team player to join our mission to enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans by building and maintaining a safe and innovative statewide transportation system.

Pay: $19.941 per hour, with eligibility for promotion to $21.470 per hour for those proficient in operating heavy highway maintenance equipment and holding a CDL. Additional payroll differentials are available to CDL holders who perform CDL functions on a regular basis, amounting to $1 per hour after 1 year of continuous service, an additional $1 after 3 years, and an additional $1 after 5 years.

Job Duties
  • Operate trucks and other light equipment; drive trucks to transport crews or materials to work sites.
  • Mow right-of-ways and maintain shoulders and roadsides using power hand mowers and tractors with attachments such as discs, harrows, seeders, cement mixers, and sprayers.
  • Operate post drivers, install and move/remove signs, fences, guardrails, and snow fences.
  • Remove and apply surfacing materials including concrete and bituminous patching, crack filling, and sealants; apply adhesives, paint, and other materials to guardrails, posts, buildings, and other structures; perform manual labor as needed; handle hazardous materials.
  • Control traffic around construction and maintenance projects, set signs and cones, relay road and weather conditions via two-way radio.
  • Move, drag, lift, load, and unload equipment, materials, supplies, and hazardous materials while observing weight restrictions; spread and tamp surfacing materials.
  • Inspect, clean, and maintain equipment; keep maintenance yards’ grounds and buildings in good shape.
  • Operate snow removal equipment as needed during emergencies or shortages.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications
  • Minimum qualifications for Senior: at least 18 years of age, valid driver’s license, Class A or B CDL with air-brakes and tanker endorsements required within 60 days of employment.
  • Minimum qualifications for Worker: at least 18 years of age, valid driver’s license.
  • Preferred qualifications include experience operating heavy equipment, a valid Class A CDL with tanker endorsement, a commercial pesticide applicator’s license, and basic computer experience.
  • Must be able to be placed on call and respond to emergencies, including non-scheduled work hours, holidays, weekends, and adverse weather conditions.
  • Must have regular and reliable attendance.
  • Physical requirements:

    safely move, drag, and lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally, and 90 or more pounds infrequently; climb, bend, and stoop; work outdoors in extreme temperatures and near high-speed traffic.
  • Must read and communicate effectively, follow instructions with minimal supervision, perform basic arithmetic, and handle hazardous materials safely.
  • Must be willing to learn new technologies, possess a quality-oriented work ethic, and communicate respectfully with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Must be able to report for emergencies within 45 minutes under normal driving conditions and be placed on an on-call status.
