Position: Judicial Assistant I

Overview

Judicial Assistants support courtroom operations and perform clerical duties in the Fresno Superior Court. The position focuses on legal document processing, courtroom assistance, and efficient court administration.

Typing Certificate Requirements
  • Minimum 5‑minute test time.
  • 35 words per minute or higher.
  • Be dated within 12 months of the job closing date.

Definition

Under immediate supervision, Judicial Assistants perform a full range of clerical and administrative duties in support of courtroom and other court operations in accordance with statutes, regulations, and established policies.

Distinguishing Characteristics
  • Assigned to clerk’s office, data entry in a courtroom, or courtroom clerk duties supporting the judge.
  • May explain court procedures to attorneys and the public inside and outside the courtroom.
Representative Duties

Typical tasks include:

  • Receive, sort, prepare, examine, and process legal documents for accuracy and validity.
  • Attend court sessions, record minutes, administer oaths, and read jury verdicts.
  • Manage exhibits, maintain evidence control, and process legal orders such as warrants and subpoenas.
  • Copy, seal, scan, and destroy case documents per court procedures.
  • Impair or record jury selections, handle jury services, and manage jury compensation.
  • Maintain court calendars and related case information.
  • Perform clerical duties such as filing, typing, data entry, and document distribution.
  • Operate telephone and office equipment, retrieve files, and conduct file searches.
  • Assist the public and attorneys with procedural information and case status queries.
  • Process payments and balance the cash drawer.
  • Maintain statutory time‑limit records, manual logs, and automated case files.
  • Provide relief coverage and professional development assistance as needed.
  • Pull and deliver court records, certify copies, retrieve files, and update databases.
  • Process case correspondence, make docket entries, notify parties, and calendar hearings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
:
High school graduation or GED equivalency.

Experience
:

  • Level I:
    Minimum two years full‑time clerical experience in a court or legal office.
  • Level II:
    Two and a half years increasingly responsible clerical experience in Fresno Superior Court.

Education and experience may be substituted with equivalent combinations that demonstrate necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Typing Requirement
:
Type at 35 wpm and possess a recent typing certificate from an authorized agency.

License
:
Valid California class C driver’s license or alternative transportation method.

Working Conditions

Primarily a climate‑controlled office setting with occasional travel and exposure to varying weather conditions.

Physical Demands
  • Keyboard, computer, and office equipment use for extended periods.
  • Fine finger manipulation for file handling.
  • Occasional lifting up to 25 lbs.
  • Reaching for items on shelves and comfortable for walking, standing, and bending.
  • Maintain travel to courtrooms and other court facilities.
Background Investigations

Mandatory modified background investigation and fingerprinting. False statements or omissions may lead to disqualification or dismissal.
