Essential Functions

  • Teach a full schedule of developmental and transfer level philosophy courses as assigned.
  • Maintain standards of professional conduct, ethics, and currency in teaching philosophy.
  • Use a variety of pedagogies and integrate innovative technology for face‑to‑face, online, and hybrid formats.
  • Communicate effectively with students and use effective teaching methods appropriate to the subject matter.
  • Adhere to institutionally approved curriculum outlines of record.
  • Evaluate student progress through tests, examinations, written assignments, oral responses, and other assessments aligned with course objectives.
  • Provide course syllabi, maintain classroom records, and submit grading and evaluation reports on time.
  • Serve on department, college, and district committees as needed.
  • Participate in program review, student learning outcome development, and assessment to improve student learning.
  • Provide instruction in philosophy in a variety of settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, online or off‑campus, and large‑group instruction as needed.
  • Perform all other duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in philosophy; OR
  • Bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a Master’s in humanities or religious studies; OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential; OR
  • Equivalent education and/or experience (requires equivalency).
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience and skill incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students.
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities.
  • Willingness to examine and remediate instructional, relational, and classroom practices to support racially minoritized students.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.
  • Demonstrated technical proficiency with computers and instructional technologies.
  • Breadth of teaching experience in philosophy, including large‑group and online instruction.
  • Graduate‑level coursework in philosophy (e.g., metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, logic, history of philosophy) and religion.
  • Experience teaching at the post‑secondary level.
  • Professional experience in curriculum development and student support.
  • Interest in collaboration with colleagues and the wider community.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the mission and goals of the community college.
Conditions of Employment

178 duty days per year. Duty days prorated based on start of assignment.

Salary and Benefits

Starting annual salary: $71,054 – $106,970 (based on education and experience).

Annual doctoral stipend: $2,419.

Fringe benefits include medical, dental, vision coverage, life insurance, and membership in the California State Teachers' Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Process

Applications are screened by Human Resources for completeness and minimum qualifications. Qualified candidates will be invited to interview. Interviews may be scheduled tentatively and will include a teaching demonstration, interview questions, and a writing prompt (if applicable). Final recommendations are made by the College President and approved by the Board of Trustees.
