Teaching Associate (TA) for the Department of English
College of Arts and Humanities
Position Overview:
The Department of English seeks graduate students as Teaching Associate applicants. Teaching Associates typically are responsible for providing classroom instruction. Eligibility is determined by successful TA eligibility , department eligibility and adequate funding.
- The department is seeking TA applicants for sections of English 5A.
- Determinant on successful TA Eligibility and Department Eligibility, TAs will teach sections of English 5B the following semester and could have opportunities to teach other beginning courses in the English Department.
Anticipated Appointment Dates:
This position is opened until filled. If you have applied and no other positions are available, you will be notified.
- Fall 2026:
August 19, 2026 - December 22, 2026; - Spring 2027:
January 15, 2027 - May 26, 2027
Students can work up to 20-hours per week;
- 1-unit is equivalent to 2.66 hours per week (40hrs x 1-unit/15-unit)
- The typical range for labs is between 1.3-wtus - 5.2-wtus (dependent on courses and number of section(s) assigned)
- The typical range for lectures is between 3-6 units (dependent on courses and number of section(s) assigned)
- No more than 7.5-units
- Instruct and manage the classroom
- Create or implement course design and assignment sequence
- Prepare course materials and classroom activities
- Respond to and evaluate student writing
- Assess student performance, including give course grades
- Assist students outside of class during office hours and by appointment
- Attend TA orientation at the beginning of the semester
- Enroll in and attend English 282 (Practicum for Teachers of Writing) once a week, each semester, as a condition of employment
- Participate in programmatic assessment procedures (Portfolio, normings, surveys, etc.)
- Teach beginning English course (as instructor of record)
- Maintain office hours
- Evaluate student work
- Must have courses in, knowledge of, and experience with literacy learning and the writing process.
- Must be a student fully admitted to the MA or MFA Program in the Department of English, in good academic standing, and be enrolled in at least 6-units for the semester or in two courses toward the degree.
- Must demonstrate satisfactory progress towards the degree.
- Should also have the ability to relate well with others within the academic environment and have the ability or potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.
- Enroll in and pass English 270 (Seminar in Writing Pedagogy: Theory and Practice) by the date of appointment to a TA position.
The Hiring Committee also looks favorably upon applicants who have successfully completed courses in history of the English language, grammar, linguistics, creative writing form and theory courses (English 241, 243, 245) or teaching English as a second language. Such courses might include English 175T (Special Topics in Rhetoric and Writing), English 131 (Literacy Studies), CI 161 (Methods and Materials in Secondary Teaching), English 132S (Rhetoric, Grammar, Writing Instruction), and Linguistics 237 (Teaching Basic Written English).
Writing, tutoring or teaching experience preferred but not required.
