Position: 26-27 AY Teaching Associate (TA) - Earth and Environmental Sciences

Position Overview

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences seeks graduate students to serve as Teaching Associates. Teaching Associates typically provide classroom instruction, including leading sections of undergraduate courses and laboratories. Eligibility is determined by successful TA eligibility, departmental criteria, and adequate funding.

Anticipated Appointment Dates
  • Fall 2026:
    August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026
  • Spring 2027:
    January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027

This position is open until filled. Applications received prior to the deadline for the first term may be considered for subsequent terms.

Hours/Units per Week
  • Students can work up to 20 hours per week.
  • 1 unit equals 2.66 hours per week.
  • The typical range for labs is 1.3–5.2 units, depending on courses and the number of sections assigned.
  • The typical range for lectures is 3–6 units, depending on courses and the number of sections assigned.
  • No more than 7.5 units per week.
Job Duties
  • Communicate lab curriculum and expectations to students as instructor of record.
  • Prepare course materials and administer examinations.
  • Set up and clean up laboratory activities.
  • Maintain office hours and provide students with additional assistance.
  • Grade student work and determine course grades.
  • Attend a weekly organizational meeting.
  • Assist faculty with field experience, supervision, simulation exercises, and/or research projects as needed.
Qualifications
  • Admission to and concurrent enrollment in the Fresno State Master’s Program in Earth and Environmental Sciences with a 3.0 GPA or better.
  • Enrollment in at least six units for the semester or in at least two courses toward the degree.
  • Demonstrated satisfactory progress toward the degree.
  • Ability to relate well with others in the academic environment and the potential to learn how to instruct and evaluate students.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Completion of a bachelor’s degree in geology, environmental science, or a related field, or equivalent coursework.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work, especially in the subject matter to be covered by the TA.
