Position Summary
University Coach (Supervisor) in the Literacy, Early, Bilingual, and Special Education Department (LEBSE) at California State University, Fresno. The role supervises Teacher Credential Candidates for the Education Specialist Credential Program in the Mild‑to‑Moderate and Extensive Support Needs credential areas, serving as a liaison between university and cooperating schools.
Responsibilities- Meet with Mentor Teachers for orientation to cover course requirements, expectations, and co‑teaching plans within the first two weeks of the semester or after student teaching begins.
- Conduct regular visits to the school site to meet with Teacher Candidates, Mentor Teachers, and administrators; lead small, individual, or virtual discussions to review information.
- Complete at least six formal lesson observations in TK20 using scripted field notes or an observation rubric based on California Teacher Performance Expectations, with at least four in‑person observations.
- Debrief each observation with the candidate to guide reflection and feedback.
- Maintain regular communication with Teacher Candidates and Mentor Teachers throughout the semester to monitor progress and provide feedback on growth areas.
- Review lesson plans and reflections, offering continuous feedback throughout the semester.
- Consult and collaborate with candidates to apply current teaching methods, materials, and resources.
- Use effective questioning and coaching strategies to help candidates develop continuous self‑assessment, self‑reflection, and goal setting.
- Identify and document areas for improvement early; monitor progress and, if needed, contact the Education Specialist Program Coordinator or invoke a Statement of Concern according to the Office of Clinical Practice Handbook.
- Support candidates with basic needs and mental health concerns, notifying the Program Coordinator when necessary, and familiarize themselves with student health and counseling resources.
- Evaluate the candidate’s Site Visitation Project and/or Teaching Sample Project, debrief results, and provide remediation if required.
- Formally evaluate candidates at mid‑semester and final semester through triad meetings that include the candidate, Mentor Teacher, and University Coach.
- Assist candidates in meeting Teaching Performance Expectations and assign a CR/NC grade via People Soft/My Fresno State .
- Attend all mandatory program events, meetings, and professional development; achieve reliability as a rater and participate in FAST training, calibration, and scoring.
- Conduct all interactions with candidates and Mentor Teachers respectfully at all times.
- Submit all proper documentation digitally through TK20.
Education: A clear Education Specialist teaching credential or an administrative services credential; a Master's degree in Special Education or a closely related field. Candidates coaching Bilingual Authorization must also possess a Bilingual Authorization or BCLAD and be fluent in Spanish or Hmong.
Experience: Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Minimum of three years of teaching experience in Special Education.
CompensationSalary commensurate with qualifications and experience, within the CSU salary range for Academic Year Lecturers (Class Code 2358). For a Master's degree holder, the range is $5,507–$6,677 per month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Actual salary is adjusted based on WTUs assigned per term.
Conditional AppointmentAppointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and follows the order of assignment provisions of the collective bargaining agreement. The university does not sponsor temporary faculty for work visas.
