Position: College and Career Counselor (Temporary)

Temporary Full-Time Position

This is a temporary full-time position and will end on December 18, 2026.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Summary

Under general supervision of the assigned supervisor, provides community outreach, career guidance and counseling. Coordinates career assessments and advises students on college application, financial aid applications, and scholarships. Also provides guidance on job readiness skills. Assist in the fulfillment of the Organization's vision and mission.

Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions

In preparing students for college and career readiness skills, College and Career Counselors will provide information and assistance for all post-secondary education and career options.

  • Organizes and promotes college-going culture and career exploration events and activities.
  • Collaborate with staff on school wide initiatives and projects.
  • Acts as liaison between school, staff and community partners.
  • Schedules monthly meetings with the college-going collaborative teams.
  • Compiles and updates students high school profile annually.
  • Make informational presentations to parents, students and other audiences.
  • Attend meetings, conferences and seminars regarding career trends, college entrance and financial aid.
  • Evaluate transcripts to ensure students are on track to graduate.
  • Administer and monitor senior surveys.
  • Assist students with their post-secondary plans.
  • Educates students and conducts parent outreach about college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing.
  • Meets with all college admissions representatives who visit school campuses and facilitate meetings between college representatives and students.
  • Acts as a point contact with community colleges.
  • Support students in the college application process and steps to enrollment, including dual/concurrent enrollment, exam registration, etc.
  • Organizes, coordinates and publicizes career-related events and other opportunities for students to learn about higher education and vocational training and preparation.
  • Contacts, schedules and arranges guest speakers from the local business community, colleges and military services to present information regarding specific occupations. Plans and coordinates Career Days, Career Month, Teen Job Fairs, as feasible.
  • Coordinate with other staff and outside agencies regarding career learning opportunities for students.
  • Travels for work related business using personal/organization vehicle.
  • Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education:
  • Master's Degree in School Counseling required.
Experience:
  • Previous experience interning or working as a School Counselor required.
Other

Qualifications:

Pupil Personnel Services Credential required. Knowledge of the components of an American School Counselor Association-aligned Comprehensive School Counseling Program. Ability to work with low-income students/families and with students/families from a variety of different backgrounds. Ability to establish and-maintain effective relationships with staff, students, parents, and the public. Ability to listen to students' concerns with patience and understanding. Ability to identify and determine the basic nature of student problems and needs, and to provide assistance.

Knowledge of principles, methods, techniques, strategies, and trends in educational, social, and emotional counseling. Knowledge of how a School Counselor works within the larger framework of a School and Professional Community. Ability to collect and analyze data, keep records, and prepare reports. Ability to maintain confidentiality of students' records. Ability to meet schedules and deadlines; work accurately and with attention to details.

Ability to work collaboratively with multiple stakeholders. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and related business software and Student Information systems. Effective presentation, written and verbal communication skills. Willing to work non-traditional hours and days to meet the needs of this position. Ability to coordinate and supervise youth and maintain a cooperative working relationship in a school setting. Ability to collaborate effectively with several agencies.

Bilingual in English and Spanish or other secondary language is desirable based on the needs of the program and clients. Maintain a valid California driver's license, reliable transportation, and auto insurance in compliance with state law, and meet the organization's insurance requirements for operating organization vehicles. Must pass DOJ and Child Abuse Index Fingerprint clearance, TB clearance.
