Department Overview

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers courses for the preparation and professional development of PreK‑12 teachers in both the Multiple Subject (elementary) and the Single Subject (secondary) Credential Programs. The department also houses two master’s programs (M.A.Ed.

-C&I and MAT) and two advanced certificate programs in educational technology and research methods. Faculty are active in teaching, scholarship, service, and grant leadership.

The University Coach (Supervisor) is a faculty member who supervises Teacher Credential Candidates for the Multiple Subject and/or Single Subject Credential Programs. As a liaison between the University and cooperating schools, the coach provides culturally responsive, high‑quality instruction, mentorship, and supervision for pre‑service student teachers and interns according to California Teaching Commission and Kremen School accreditation requirements. The coach also communicates school needs to the University to improve the Teacher Education Programs.

• Meet with Mentor Teachers for an orientation to review course requirements and discuss expectations, roles, and co‑teaching during the first two weeks of the semester.
• Make regular visits to the school site to meet with Teacher Candidates, Mentor Teachers, Administrators, or visit/observe Teacher Candidates; hold small group, individual, or virtual discussions to review relevant information.
• Complete a minimum of six formal lesson observations in TK20 using scripted field notes or an observation rubric based on the California Teacher Performance Expectations (TPEs); at least four must be in‑person. Document debriefing meetings after each observation.
• Maintain communication with the Teacher Candidate and Mentor Teacher throughout the semester to ensure progress, providing documented feedback on growth areas.
• Review lesson plans and reflections, providing continuous feedback.
• Consult and collaborate to help the Teacher Candidate understand and apply current teaching methods and resources.
• Use effective questioning and coaching strategies to build confidence and support ongoing self‑assessment, reflection, and goal setting.
• Discuss and document areas for improvement; monitor progress and consult the Program Coordinator or Department Chair if needed.
• Support the Candidate’s basic, emotional, and mental health needs; notify the program coordinator and Department Chair of concerns.
• Evaluate the Teacher Candidate’s Site Visitation Project (SVP) and/or Teaching Sample Project (TSP); debrief and document results, providing remediation when necessary.
• Formally evaluate the Teacher Candidate in a triad meeting at least twice per semester (mid‑semester and final).
• Assist the Teacher Candidate with meeting the TPEs and assign a CR/NC grade through People Soft/My Fresno State .
• Attend all mandatory program events, meetings, and training; obtain reliability as a rater and participate in FAST training, calibration, and scoring.
• Uphold Fresno State’s Principles of Community in all interactions.
• Submit all required documentation digitally through TK20.

Appointments are contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and are subject to order of assignment provisions in the collective bargaining agreement. Eligibility to work in the United States is required; the university does not sponsor work visas.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, within the CSU salary range for Class Code 2358. Temporary Faculty with a master’s degree earn $5,507–$6,677 per month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Monthly salary will be adjusted based on WTUs assigned per term.

The temporary faculty pool is continuously open and filled as needed. Number of positions varies by semester. The pool is active for two academic terms; reapplication is required for continued service.
