Department Overview

The School of Music offers a comprehensive range of programs, including concentrations in Music Education, Instrumental Performance, Vocal Performance, Composition, and Jazz Studies. Performance specializations include voice, as well as instrumental areas such as wind, brass, string, percussion, and piano. The School of Music is recognized for its continued growth and serves a diverse student population from across California’s Central Valley region.

Position

Summary
  • Studio Instructor for applied lessons needed.
  • Additional courses may be assigned as needed to support students’ educational objectives, including Musicology, Music Education, and Music Theory.
Instructor Responsibilities
  • Adhere to and implement university and system-wide policies as directed per Academic Policy Manual 306, paragraph 2.
  • Prepare, deliver, conduct, proctor, and grade lectures, office hours, homework assignments, quizzes, class projects, and exams.
  • Ensure all classes are offered and meet as scheduled throughout the semester, in the mode assigned (asynchronous, synchronous, in-person, or hybrid).
Conditional Appointment

Appointment is contingent upon budget and enrollment considerations and is subject to the Order of Work provisions in the collective bargaining agreement between California State University and California Faculty Association. Faculty are required to demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States. California State University, Fresno does not sponsor Temporary Faculty for work visas.

Compensation

The salary range for Temporary Faculty with a Master’s degree is $5,507–$6,677 per month when teaching full time (15 WTUs). Starting salaries are usually at or near the minimum of the range. Actual monthly salary will be adjusted based on the number of WTUs assigned per academic term.

Semester Information
  • Fall 2026:
    August 19, 2026 – December 22, 2026
  • Spring 2027:
    January 15, 2027 – May 26, 2027
Required Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree in the area of consideration or a closely related field, or substantial experience in the related area.
  • For studio teaching: high level of performance proficiency and an active career as an accomplished instrumentalist or vocalist, with proven expertise as a soloist and ensemble performer.
  • For undergraduate/graduate teaching: ability to deliver structured, curriculum‐based instruction that supports student learning and academic development, and an established professional career as an instrumentalist or vocalist.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit and retain students.
  • Ability to maintain excellent relationships with public and private educators within the relevant service area.
  • Commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A doctorate in the area of consideration.
  • A commitment to teaching excellence at the undergraduate level, evidenced by prior teaching experience and evaluations.
  • Successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level.
  • A distinguished professional background and experience in university teaching or a comparable setting.
