Location: Northern CA, Bay Area, and LA East/Metro/Southern CA (multiple positions)
Engagement Type: 1099 Independent Contractor — as-needed, assigned via approved Work Order
Compensation: $100/hour ($800/8-hour day), paid per class taught; course lengths range from 8 to 24 hours.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We need an experienced hazardous materials/confined space trainer to deliver HAZWOPER 3-day initial and refresher courses, along with permit-required confined space entry training, at facilities statewide.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver HAZWOPER 24-hour Initial and 8-hour Refresher courses per 29 CFR (e).
- Deliver Confined Space and Confined Space Refresher courses, including hands-on entry/rescue simulation components.
- Select and demonstrate proper use of PPE, air monitoring, and rescue equipment during hands-on sessions.
- Document trainee competency evaluations for hands-on portions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- HAZWOPER training must meet Cal/OSHA requirements and standards — qualifies as a competent HAZWOPER instructor under 29 CFR (e)(5) (e.g., CIH, CSP, or documented equivalent training/experience plus a recognized HAZWOPER train-the-trainer certificate).
- For Confined Space:
Cal/OSHA Confined Space training, PLUS a minimum of 5 years of documented experience working on training and/or projects involving confined spaces, both permit-required and non-permit-required (per IFB requirement — both are required, not either/or). - Hands-on experience with atmospheric monitoring equipment, PPE selection, and confined space rescue procedures.
- Able to safely run practical/hands-on exercises for groups of up to 8-10 participants.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
- Experience training municipal, state, or utility facility staff.
