Position: Costume Shop Lead Technician (Performing Arts Tech 11/12)

Costume Shop Lead Technician (Performing Arts Technician III) Compensation and Benefits

The anticipated salary hiring range is up to $4,241 - $4,590 per month (Steps 1 –
5), commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The salary range for this classification is $4,241 to $6,177 per month.

  • This position is on an 11/12 Pay Plan which is equivalent to eleven months of salary distributed over a 12-month period. The scheduled month off will be July.
  • Initial appointment will be on a 12 month pay plan (salary range: $4,626 – $5,007 per month) from the date of hire through the end of the July 2027 pay period. At the beginning of the August 2027 pay period, the appointment will change to an 11/12 pay plan whereby the incumbent will work 11 months per year and are paid 12 months (11/12) with each subsequent July off.
  • Area of consideration is limited to on-campus, state funded employees only.

Job Summary

Under the general supervision of the faculty costume designer, the Costume Shop Lead Technician is responsible for the leadership, coordination and planning of the day-to-day operations of the costume shop, including its machines, work spaces and costume stock. The Shop Lead also demonstrates sewing techniques and directs the activities of laboratory-students in the costume shop. This position provides lead work oversight of costume shop staff, student assistants and laboratory students.

Qualifications
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, and prepare detailed written information.
  • Plan, organize, and schedule activities.
  • Ability to create and maintain program records and provide data for review in developing and implementing strategies to meet programmatic goals and enhance processes.
  • Ability to conduct research to develop a comprehensive knowledge of costume design.
  • Ability to support classroom instruction by performing classroom demonstrations related to the daily operation of production in the costume shop.
  • Ability to work with faculty, provide training, oversee day-to-day operations and provide lead work direction to students involved in productions.
Education and Experience
  • Four years of related experience working for a theater, repertory or stock company engaged in costume construction, stage and set construction, lighting production, and/or sound/audioproduction and completion of professional training or college coursework.

Or

  • Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units incourses in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience.

Or

  • Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units incourses in a related field may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
