Position Overview
Principal Geotechnical Engineer/Group Manager – Fresno, California.
We are looking for a motivated, creative, and highly talented leader to manage and grow Kleinfelder’s Fresno geotechnical team, drive business development, and coordinate services with internal and external teams. The role includes operational support, supervision, geotechnical engineering design, construction oversight, and project management.
Sign‑On BonusMinimum $10,000 sign‑on bonus for this role.
ResponsibilitiesThe successful candidate will be responsible for managing and growing the geotechnical team, developing business opportunities, and coordinating services with internal and external stakeholders. Duties include operational support, supervising staff, providing constructible designs, responding to client needs, meeting deadlines, and ensuring clear communications with clients and staff.
Position Requirements- 12+ years of related experience (15+ years highly preferred)
- Licensed professional civil engineer, PE, in California
- Proven experience in identifying and capturing business development opportunities, preparing proposals, budgets, owner/teaming relationships, and leading technical aspects of large pursuits
- Proven experience leading diverse project teams
- Proven experience managing and mentoring staff
- Proven experience being a trusted advisor to clients of all sizes
- Proven experience assisting clients from design through construction
- Proven experience in geotechnical levee design, seepage analysis, slope stability of embankments, design of shallow, mat, and deep foundations, and design of retaining walls
- Proven experience providing construction support as geotechnical engineer of record
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering
- Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering strongly desired
- Licensed geotechnical engineer, GE, in California
- Recognized leader in the field
- Ability to develop highly motivated individuals
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently or in multidisciplinary teams
- Experience planning, implementing, and managing geotechnical exploration programs including laboratory testing
- Experience guiding staff engineers in material and site characterization, foundation recommendations, slope stability, and settlement analyses
- Experience preparing geotechnical reports, drawings, and specifications for foundations and earthwork for a wide range of projects (transportation, water, retail, hospitality, commercial)
- Experience supporting project managers in budget management, client updates, and general project management tasks
- Experience preparing and presenting technical presentations to clients and technical review boards
- Experience supervising field observation, testing, and performing site visits
- Proactive troubleshooting with client‑focused solutions
- Ability to interface with civil design teams to develop fit‑for‑use geotechnical solutions
- Ability to organize priorities and multi‑task effectively
- Collaborative with Area leadership and Project Managers to resource delivery effectively
- Thirst to learn and achieve continuous improvement in a team environment
Kleinfelder offers an excellent compensation and benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, 401(k) plan, and paid holidays. The expected salary range for the position is $133,494 – $227,531, based on individual qualifications and experience.
