About the Role
Under the direction of the California High‑Speed Rail Authority’s (Authority) Supervising Transportation Engineer, the Transportation Engineer (Civil) performs a wide variety of professional engineering work primarily in a field setting. The incumbent is responsible for overseeing and inspecting portions of the design and construction, such as bridges, retaining walls, Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) walls, and other structures, including guideways, drainage, concrete and asphalt pavement, embankments, barriers, utilities, traffic control, striping and signs, sidewalks, railroad, and other civil work for the complex Construction Package mega‑project, including overseeing the Design Build (DB) contractor’s efficient design and construction of a quality facility within the project’s cost, scope, and schedule.
The incumbent will also provide oversight of work performed by the Project and Construction Management (PCM) consultant, the Program Delivery Support (PDS) contracts, and other various contracts. The incumbent assists the Design and Construction Engineer in representing the Authority at meetings and prepares correspondence and reports.
- Excellent written and oral communication and negotiating skills.
- Knowledge of project development, specifications, design, construction, and maintenance techniques.
- Experience applying civil engineering and engineering science based principles related to stress analysis, strength of materials, geotechnical, and hydraulics.
- Experience applying construction and design methods and procedures.
- Experience supporting quality assurance, inspections, and specification compliance activities.
- Experience preparing technical documentation and reports.
- Knowledge and experience of engineering surveying, materials, testing, tools, and equipment used in construction and maintenance of transportation facilities.
- Ability to analyze and develop effective solutions to difficult and technical problems relating to high‑speed rail project.
- Knowledge and ability to use office applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations; take meeting minutes, and prepare meeting calendars.
- Demonstrated ability to do mapping and drafting maps, charts, and diagrams of transportation systems.
- Demonstrated ability to understand construction plans and specifications of transportation systems and transportation facility planning and design principles for a high‑speed rail system.
