THE POSITION
In acknowledging the ten day posting requirement referenced in Fresno Municipal Code Section 3-239, the Personnel Department has posted this announcement for the closing of this open till filled recruitment.
The Building Inspector II recruitment will be closed effective midnight, June 24, 2026.
Under supervision, a Building Inspector II examines, evaluates, and approves the construction or alteration of residential and light commercial buildings in accordance with the Building Plumbing Mechanical, and Electrical Regulations of the Fresno Municipal Code.
Building Inspector II is a combination working level class in the Building Inspection series. Incumbents engage in the enforcement of pertinent codes, ordinances, and regulations related to fire, life and health safety, accessibility, structural and nonstructural, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical elements of construction, for public or private building projects permitted within the City of Fresno and provide consulting services to architects, engineers, designers, contractors, and owners.
One vacancy currently exists in the Planning and Development Department within the Inspection Services Division. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three months.
THEREQUIREMENTS
These are entrance requirements to the competitive examination and do not assure a place on the eligible list. Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify:
- One (1) year of experience equivalent to that gained as a Building Inspector I with the City of Fresno, completion of certification as a Combination Dwelling Inspector or Combination Inspector; and sixty (60) semester units of higher education as noted below.
- Four (4) years of experience as a general contractor supervising more than one trade; and sixty (60) semester units of higher education as noted below.
- Six (6) years journey level trades experience involved in multi- or single-family residential or light commercial construction; and sixty (60) semester units of higher education as noted below.
- Three (3) years of experience as an Environmental and Safety Consultant II, Plumbing and Mechanical Consultant II, or Electrical Safety Consultant II with the City of Fresno or equivalent; and sixty (60) semester units of higher education as noted below.
EDUCATION:
Accredited college or university major course work must be in one of the following: construction technology, architectural drafting, industrial technology, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering, engineering technology or closely related field.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. Likewise, additional education may be substituted for the required journey level experience on a year-for-year basis up to two (2) years.

Possess a valid California Driver's License at time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire must provide proof of a valid driver's license and current copy of their driving record.
Incumbents selected must acquire certification from the International Code Council or International Conference of Building Officials as a "Certified Combination Dwelling Inspector", or "Certified Combination Inspector" during the first two years of employment in the Building Inspector series and maintain the required certificate for the entire term of employment in this job classification.
THE SELECTION PROCESSThe examination process may consist of the following:
- Application Review - Qualifying Only:
Applications submitted will be reviewed and a limited number of the most qualified candidates may be invited to the oral examination. The selection will be based upon those applications and resumes which demonstrate the greatest breadth and depth of applicable education, experience, skills and training. Therefore, applicants are urged to submit sufficiently detailed information in their application materials for a proper evaluation. - Oral Examination (100%): A panel of subject matter experts may conduct a job‑related Oral Examination in order to evaluate each candidate's knowledge of specifications, codes, ordinances, regulations, and practices used in the design and construction of building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical installations in residential and light commercial building occupancies and accessory structures; or other topics related to a candidate's training, experience and qualifications for the position of Building Inspector II.
