Community Access Advocate (434)
Fresno, CA

The Community Access Advocate serves as a self‑advocate and peer leader, supporting other individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to understand their rights, promote inclusion, and navigate access under the HCBS Final Rule. This role actively participates in advocacy, community education, and leadership development efforts while providing peer‑to‑peer support and training. This role is currently grant funded and scheduled to sunset on 3/31/26.

How

will I contribute
  • Serve as a peer‑to‑peer trainer for individuals with IDD, focusing on self‑advocacy, access, and inclusion in alignment with HCBS Final Rule principles.
  • Educate peers about their rights under HCBS and the compliance reporting process.
  • Attend and participate in Community Access Committee meetings; provide personal feedback and collaborate with others to develop next steps for improving community access.
  • Represent Kings View at Primary Advisory Committee meetings and participate in community advocacy opportunities.
  • Assist in creating educational and advocacy‑related materials, including peer training presentations, community resource lists, informational flyers and posters.
  • Provide training and mentorship to new Community Access Advocates and interns as needed.
  • Support general program goals and complete tasks assigned by the HCBS Program Administrator. Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall functioning and success of the program.
What I bring
  • Lived experience as an individual with IDD and an interest in peer support and community advocacy.
  • Familiarity with the experiences and needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Basic understanding of self‑advocacy, community inclusion, and rights under the Home and Community‑Based Services (HCBS) Final Rule. Willingness to learn and share information in peer‑to‑peer settings.
  • Ability to share personal experiences to support and connect with others. Comfortable speaking in group settings and giving presentations (training provided). Willingness to work collaboratively and attend meetings both virtually and in‑person. Basic computer or communication skills, with accommodation provided as needed.
  • Enthusiastic, open to learning, and passionate about advocacy and inclusion. Demonstrates reliability, curiosity, and a willingness to communicate needs and feedback. Brings a positive attitude, flexibility, and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the community.
  • Lived experience navigating disability systems or receiving HCBS services.
