Job DescriptionThis Lab Technician role focuses on sample control within a laboratory environment. The technician logs and tracks all incoming and outgoing samples, verifies their receipt and documentation, and ensures that bottle kits and samples move efficiently and safely through the laboratory workflow. The position supports accurate testing by maintaining precise records, adhering to DOT, EPA, and internal SOP requirements, and contributing to a clean, safe, and well-organized lab.
Responsibilities- Receive and unload incoming samples or consignments in accordance with DOT regulations and verify each receipt against the Chain of Custody (COC) and corresponding quote on a daily basis.
- Review COCs to ensure they are accurate, complete, and correct, and proactively seek resolution for any discrepancies or missing information.
- Log samples into the Lab Management System each day, assign lot numbers for tracking purposes, and distribute the associated paperwork to Project Managers.
- Label samples clearly so they can be identified by their assigned lot numbers and deliver them to the appropriate laboratory sections for analysis on a daily basis.
- Prepare bottle kits each day for shipment to clients, following established procedures and ensuring compliance with EPA and DOT requirements so clients can collect and return samples for analysis.
- Forward samples to other laboratories, as needed, in accordance with DOT regulations when tests are required that are not performed at the current location.
- Dispose of spent samples, waste, and other potentially hazardous materials in strict accordance with established procedures and safety guidelines.
- Monitor freezer and cooler temperatures daily to confirm readings remain within SOP guidelines and document any deviations as required.
- Clean and organize the department each day to support a clean, safe work environment and to promote a smooth flow of daily operations.
- Maintain and promote safety at all times by conducting all operations in a safe and environmentally compliant manner.
- Stock supplies and materials daily and assist with inventory activities to ensure an adequate quantity of materials is available to perform tasks appropriately.
- Accurately document and record sample information, tracking data, and any other required records in a timely and organized manner.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with internal teams and accurately document information.
- High level of attention to detail to verify Chain of Custody forms, match samples to quotes, and maintain precise sample tracking.
- Problem-solving skills to identify and resolve discrepancies in documentation or sample information.
- Basic ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory and testing procedures to support proper handling, routing, and disposal of samples.
- Basic ability to analyze data and accurately document and record results and observations.
- Familiarity with sample control processes, including logging, labeling, and tracking samples in a lab management system.
- Experience working with and following laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- High school diploma or GED.
- Approximately 2–4 years of experience in sample control, laboratory operations, or a closely related lab environment.
Skills & Qualifications
- Associate's degree in laboratory science or a related field is preferred.
- Experience working with DOT regulations related to the receipt, shipment, and forwarding of laboratory samples.
- Familiarity with EPA requirements for sample collection kits and related documentation.
- Experience disposing of laboratory waste and potentially hazardous materials in accordance with established procedures.
- Comfort working within a structured environment that relies on SOPs and regulatory compliance.
